Gear shifter whacked

While riding my '06 955i today, the tranny quit shifting. I could Go from first to second, but no further. I pulled over and tried shifting by hand, but could not feel it shift through the cycle. While riding (very slowly, in second gear) towards home, it got to the point were it would not stay in first during down-shifting, but would pop into neutral, unless I kept the lever down with my foot until time to release the clutch.

I prayed, and after getting no Divine solution, I whacked the foot lever with my boot, which allowed it to shift into 3rd. I did it again and got fourth. I came to a light, down-shifted and had the same issues all over again. I finally made it home and am currently missing my Bonneville, which gave me over 8000 trouble free miles. The Tiger has fewer than 2700 and a gearbox that is beyond clunky; it's junky.

Anyone got a solution? Mine will be to take it to the shop and let the warranty take over.

I had a bit similar problems. I adjusted clutch cable and problems were gone. Give it a try.

I have found that the smallest amount of clutch adjustment can have quite an effect so I hope this will fix it. It's very rare to hear of gearboxes jamming on modern Triumphs.

Jon

PS - adjuysted mine today after feeling very clunky with the changes. It definately makes a difference.

Just out of interest, what is the correct amount of play in the clutch cable?

Andy.

Okay, I'm a mechanical nit-wit. Exactly how would I adjust the clutch cable? is it done by the lever (where the thumbwheel-type connector is) or by the gear box?

There have also been so instances of clutch plates sticking resulting in hard shifting. Requires disassembly and cleaning, should be covered under warranty.

Either, it doesn't really matter. Best is to make sure you're about in the middle of the adjustment on the lever so you can go either way.

You need about 3-4mm free movement. I must say I rarely need to adjust mine.

Well, I had to whack it from the side with my boot, so it was not a true kick. But, it was four. I was unable to get to fifth due to trafic speed, though I sure the folks riding behind me must have wondered what the heck i was doing.

Um, ok. Which lever? The clutch lever or the foot shifter? Sorry, this is a new world for me (I am planing on orering the Haynes manual for the 955i).
