Oil Leak.......agghh

Hey Guys..

I have just recently found a small oil leak on my 2005 Tiger. The guy who had it before me rode it in the AZ desert quite a bit so there was a whole lot of oily muck and crud that I never noticed it when I bought it a few months ago. This past week I noticed the muck had a wet leak...did I mention I HATE oil leaks? Drives me crazy. Today I took it over to the car wash and degreased the sucka, and it would appear that I have discovered the culprit. I looked in the service manual and I cannot seem to find a description of the leaking part.

There is a small round protrusion on the right side of the crank case just above the oil pan with a recessed 7mm(? I think) allen bolt in it. It would appear that the oil is weeping from around that bolt. I would take a pic, but I don't have my camera with me here at work. It seems only to be leaking when the engine is running and not at rest.

Is this someting I can drain the oil pan, undo the bolt, put a nice new washer/gasket in there? Will I seriously wreck something? Can anyone direct me to an area in the service manual that describes this piece of equipment and how to go about rectifying this leak?

Thanks E

Your little leak

Hi E,

If you are talking about the right hand front end of the crankcase, there is an oval protrusion with what is described as a 'Dryseal' plug.

If it is this then a gasket or 'o' ring is not going to help i doubt?? You will need to replace the plug i guess

Triumph part number 3450005 - T0301
Hope this helps ??

Hi E,

I think you're talking about the cover that allows access to the RH end of the crankshaft. You can remove it to enable the crankshaft to be rotated when doing valve clearances.

If that's the case I had a bit of oil seepage from mine, and removing the "plug" (it's about 2" diam), cleaning everything up, including the 'O' ring, and reassembling cured the leak.

I guess if it's a bad leak you may need a new 'O' ring, but I doubt it.

Dryseal plug

AH Haa! It could be the Dryseal plug..., I really appreciate the help guys. I will see if I can find any reference to it in the service manual I have at home. I was pretty sure that I could remove it without a problem, but I didn't want it to be securing something in the crankcase that might bust loose and become a floater in the engine!!

Tassie, the plug I am looking at is within the oval barrel and is roughly 1-1.5 cm in diameter, it is a chrome allen head just above the oil pan on the right side of the crankcase. I think it fits a 7 or 8 mm allen head.

I called the Triumph dealer here in town and described the location and description to him,......he said "I have no idea without seeing it."

Thanks guys. E

Have a look here or on one of the other pics on the site - this is an excellent resource for Tigers.

Strange, it looks like perhaps the only non-metric bit on the Tiger.

I'm having the same exact problem on my 05. I thought it was coming from the same bolt you have been refering to, but I found out it was coming from the crankcase cover that everyone keeps mentioning. The oil drips down from the cover and then collects around that small bolt.

I haven't tried pulling the cover yet, but I will this weekend and try cleaning it like Tassie_Tiger did.

Well, I couldn't wait until this weekend. I went to the dealer and got the o-ring that goes with that large crankcase cover for $7.95. I replaced it and the leak appears to be gone. I drove it for 50 miles and it's clean as a whistle.
