Storage box on pannier rail ??

Hi Tiger's,

On my last Tiger (900), with Givi panniers and a Givi pannier rack, I made a metal storage box that fitted to the inner side of the left hand pannier rack. It had enough room for loads of tools, puncture repair kit, tyre levers, etc. It also made the bike look more symetrical when looking at it from the rear, as the exhaust was on the other side. You can just make it out in the photos:

So my question is - has anyone tried, or indeed succeeded, to do the same on the 955 with standard Triumph pannier racks ??

By this I mean when you are not carrying the panniers on the bike.

I would like to try by getting hold of a standard Triumph left sided pannier, then modify it into a box that can carry tools, etc, by taking the plastic off and mating it to a metal box.

I hope you realise that was difficult to explain, but I think you get the idea !!

Regards,
Graeme.

Thats a neat idea, but the Triumph mounting system doesn't use frames. There are two pins on a top mounting that the pannier hangs from, and a lower peg, that a fork locates over.

Hi Stuart,

Yeah, that's the problem, the pannier hangs off rails.

I thought it might be possible to fabricate something that replicates the top of the pannier, then just attach it to a metal box.

I thought someone might of had a go, but obviously not.

Regards,
Graeme.

Graeme,

Do you mean something like this shown on the red Tiger? If so contact Kuzzin Kenny as he made the boxes up. What is not shown in the pic is the other side of his bike which has a smaller box fitted where he carries his chain/tools, etc.

You know when you can't see the wood for the trees ?

I found a quick solution, although far from perfect, that uses the exsisting pannier rail.

First of all I stripped down the pannier rail, by removing the two nuts and bolts:

Then I took the rail off:

I haven't got a metal box to put on just yet, so this will do for demonstration purposes:

It would just be a case of finding a metal box the correct size, drilling two holes where the bolts go, and bolt it on. Easy !

Not ideal, but a quick fix for those of us who don't ride with our panniers on all the time, and want a bit more space for a decent tool kit, puncture repair kit, etc.

What do you think ??

Why do you need a bigger tool kit? These bikes never break down............
