Totally O/T I know but why do people often obscure their number plates on web pic? I've done it myself assuming that there must be a good reason but on reflection can't see that posting a number plate on a website reveals anything more than riding the bike down the road where anyone can see it.

Hi ian when i worked in the motor trade it was common practice to tape up number plates because we were infomed by the police that criminals were taking down the numbers of vehicles on transporters that were obviously writen off and using them on ringers. I know you can take a number off anything but thats what we were told. Take it easy

I think it's just paranoia.

I am sure you are aware that anyone wanting to steal your bike can look at the number plate, do a check on one of the websites that do vehicle detail checks, find out your address from it, and come round and do their best to nick your bike. It happens quite a bit, just the same as people being followed home.

As we all know these scum have no respect for property or owners. They will stab you or shoot you just to get away.

Anything to lessen the risk is worth it for me.

Anyone got any ideas for a "box" to use ?

Preferably something with a lock.

Size - about 30cm x 20cm x 10cm.

At the various Land Rover shows I go to, there is a company called Anchor Supplies. They deal in army surplus type stuff.Amongst the stuff on show a various sizes of ammo boxes, probably worth five minutes checking their website.

The trouble with anchor supplies is that they have stuff you didn't even know existed, but that it's impossible to live without once you've seen it......

I finally got round to putting a box on my pannier rail. It's not ideal as I have to unbolt it every time I need to put the panniers on, but will do for now.

It's great for carrying tools, puncture repair kit, tyre levers, chain lube, etc.

Hi All,

Just a repeat of the other post:

Apologies for bringing back old threads, but you never know, it might help someone looking to do something similar.

As you will notice from the last post I had to unbolt the box every time I wanted to put my panniers back on, so I finally got round to making a bracket that I can remove when I want to put my panniers on:

It's made from steel bar and is lockable just as the pannier bracket.

It can be taken off so I can use it on a bigger box, etc.

Just right for all the odds and sods I need to carry, that don't fit under the seat.
