Black Tiger Paint Code?

Help? Does anybody happen to know or know how to figure out which of the four different BLACK paints is used on the 2002 Tiger. The Triumph site lists Obsidian / Jet / Assam / or Diablo ? I am trying to get my panniers painted to match.

I've definitely seen something on this site listing what colours came with which years but the reorganisation seems to have lost some things.

Recently needed a paint code for my caspian blue tiger. Local dealer was as much use as a chocolate fire guard. Ended up 'phoning the factory quoted the vin and they helped. Only took a couple of minute and it was sorted. Even quoted who the manufacturer was which helped my repairer no end. Might be helpful!

Slainte!

Tiger Paint

Somewhat ironic Scotia that my bags are Caspian Blue and I need them to be black. Anyway I took the rear cowl into a shop here tha supplies all the local autobody guys. He said ...." there are only 2 blacks..GM black and then the others".

I went with the others.

Hi Zam, you are opening a whole can of worms with a statement like, 'black is black'. For your information, black IS NOT black at all!
gbeasley, the colour of your 2002 is JET BLACK, manufacturer is IVC and the paint code is L2344.
Roy.

A paint code simply denotes a manufacturers catalog color.
when mixing paint, each paint manufacturer has a combination of colors & chemicals they prescribe to be mixed together to create their version of the final OEM or custom color.

so, "red" might have
20 grams of A
200 grams of B
126 grams of C
and 1000 grams of D
all mixed together to make ziNgh pOw RED.

virtually every color has a multi "color" mix - except black

when mixing black, you simply have one color. Black...they might call the final color something different (extra super dark deep space black!) and code it something different (br549) but in the end...it is what it is - plain 'ole black.

IF a "black" has somthing else in it (a blue pearl for instance, like in "night hawk black" on some Hondas ---> it's actually a blue) it is no longer black...

Been doing this for years, black is black (no matter what they want you to believe)

OK Zam, I will accept your explanation. However can you tell me why on some of the black bikes I see in sunlight, they have a brown or grey hue? I agree some of them are BLACK but I have had black painted frames, oil tanks, battery boxes and Nacelles before which are not black black.

There's more to the final color than the actual "color" sprayed
A brownish black can be caused by a dirty gun (color pollution), yellowish or yellowing clear, actual degredation of the pigment in the original color (fade) or poor coverage (thin) - finish will have s factor too (slick or textured etc...)

I didn't mean to imply that "black" can't look different, it can - but is usually caused by one (or more) of the reasons mentioned.

case in point - (I used to be a Grand National nut) back in the eightys, some of the Buick Grand Nationals had a brownish cast/haze to them. It ended up that there was a gold metallic pollutant in the black paint/system being used that gave the cars a brown cast in the light...almost a gold pearl look...the solution was to simply clean their paint system.

Thanks for that, seems like cleanliness is the important factor here then? Keep one gun for black ONLY.
Roy.
