Question Optimate charger

I recently bought an Optimate 3SP. Because I am not able to get out and ride every weekend, and with the recent cold weather when the Temp in the garage where I keep the girlie often falls below -5, I thought it would be a good idea to keep it on trickle charge. I bought the adaptor so that I could plug it straight into the power take-off socket. First time I switched it on, the power ON light illuminated and so did the red WARNING light. As far as I know the battery is in good condition - spins the engine over easily and she fires up every time. Does the red light mean it requires no charging or is something wrong? This query is necessary because I have lost the instruction leaflet! Any advice welcome.

The red LED indicates a weak battery, or at least the voltage has dropped below 12.2V. If that were true, I doubt you'd be able to start it. My guess is you have a voltage drop either in your auxiliary outlet plug you are using or in the auxiliary plug circuit itself. That is actually not all that unusual, OEM wiring circuits are notorious for voltage losses.

To check, use the charger directly on your battery with the alligator clips, do you get the same indications? IF so, you got a weak battery. If not check the resistance with an ohmmeter from your auxiliary plug back to the negative and positive cables (with the battery out). IF that is more than a few ohms, you got a bad connection somewhere, and need to clean connectors etc....

Optimate charger

I have a 2001 955i Tiger and have been using an optimate for three years. Occasionally the red light on the optimate comes on when I turn the charger on and the battery is fully charged. I find that if I disconnect the charger for 30 seconds and then reconnect that the red light has gone out.

Might sound like a daft question but did you make sure the + & - are the right way round when you put the plug on?

If I remember correctly the Optimate is to be connected and then disconnected-then reconnected as it programs itself for the proper cycle for your battery. The redlight goes on , but if you disconnect and reconnect it should go out and go all orange until the battery is fully charged -then it will go green. Read the instructions please! You may have a bad battery?
Try the drill-plug in , unplug, and re plug-see if that is it.

Exclamation Charging in -5 ?

I do not think it is a good idea to charge SLA (Sealed Acid) batteries in temperatures under 0. Any SLA battery can be safely charged when temperature is above 0.
Otherwise it might damage the battery.
