Question Fuel Injector cleaner

I have an 02 that I bought used from a dealer 7 months ago with 12,000 miles on it. Bike has run smooth as silk for the past 4000 miles

I added a can of fuel injector cleaner to the tank and at about 10 miles started to notice some unusual behavior, I was on my way to work yesterday when the engine died while running 45mph. This happened twice within a span of 20-30 seconds then the bike ran fine.

On my way to lunch I noticed the tach was jumping 1500 RPM; these jumps were very quick, lasting less than 1/4 of a second. At a stop light I could hear the engine start to rev with the tach swings but while riding I could not feel any surges when the tach would jump. This flicking of the tach went on for about 4-5 miles then disappeared.

Any thoughts as to why this would be happening?

Thanks

Tim

I dont know if 'injector'cleaners are just snake oil along with oil additives that supposodly coat your engine internals with PTFE. I suppose if they were that good they would be recommended by car/bike manufacturers.I religiously used a petrol additive and an oil additive in a car I had a few years ago.The end result was a engine that did 75,000 miles and sounded and felt like it had done 175,000. It was only after I researched properly what I had been using (Doh!) that I realised what had happend. As I say I dont know about injector cleaners. But I stick to regular oil changes with a good quality oil and fuel filter renewals at recommended intervals. You might have to run a few tanks of fuel through to flush your fuel system out and get it ticking over properly.

If you use good quality top brand fuel (Shell, BP, Chevron etc.), you shouldn't need any injector cleaner because the fuel has cleaning additives in it already. I'd syphon out as much as you can and refill with clean fuel. Maybe add a little bit of the drained fuel into a full tank, bit by bit, to get some use of it later.

Of course, having said that, it just occurred to me that you may have added far too much additive. One can, which you say you added, is probably enough for a car tank. i.e. 12 gallons or so. NOT the 5 gallons in a Tiger's tank. Could be that it needs thinning down a bit.

Some guys use this.

I have not used it as I have not had the need. But I do change all the filters when required.

Sea Foam

I have used Sea Foam in my bikes every 6 tanks of fuels or so without ever having what you have described. I only add about 1 oz or 2 in the tank.

I used to use it in my Ural Crank case for a few hundred kms before an oil change, but I don't think I will in the Tiger because the wet clutch.....not sure how that will work.

The tach jumping like that would lead me to believe you have an electrical problem, and I would expect it to reappear in the future. I seriously doubt that you could put any fuel additive in your tank that would cause the problem you have described.

I had the same problem with a Kawasaki several years ago and it was, in fact, electrical....a faulty battery.

Glad that worked out relatively easily. For what it's worth, I use Seafoam regularly in all my vehicles on an occasional basis.
