Tiger Payload?
Can any of you Tiger guys let me know what the maximum payload is on an
'07 or '08 Tiger?
Running a Scrambler now but wife wants to ride 2-up on occasion. According to the manual the max. payload on a Scrambler is aobut 440 pounds. Hoping to pick up another bike with max. payload of about 500 pounds (rider, pillion, panniers, and luggage.)
Thanks!

For the '07 Tiger 1050, it's listed as 440 lbs (200 kg) for the rider, passenger, luggage, etc.--maximum payload.

Thanks RedBird. I was hoping for more. Seems a little light for a bike that is advertised as having 2-up touring capability.

It's still more than a Gold Wing, which I believe has a capacity of about 390-410lbs.
I don't think you'll find any bikes with a load capacity of 500lbs or more. The BMW's are typically rated higher, as I recall, but I don't think any of them are listed at over 500lbs. R1200RT is rated at something like 446 lbs.
I think you would be fine on a Tiger. I don't have full luggage, but with my wife and me, with a load in the topbox, (about 400lbs combined load) it works great. And I think it would be a nice improvement in ride over a Scrambler.

Rincewind, I just checked the BMW website. R1200RT weighs 505 lbs. dry with a maximum weight of 1091 lbs. Add the weight of gas and the wet weight is probably around 570 lbs. This leaves 521 lbs. to work with (riders, gear, etc.). The R1200RT is also about $5,000 to $6,000 more than a Tiger, ouch!
You are right about the ride. The Scrambler rides great on secondary roads but is a little challenging at speed. I haven't ridden one but my guess is that the Tiger would be a comfortable ride in most riding situations.
Thanks for the feedback,
Pat

Thanks for the correction on the RT specs, Pat. I didn't realize the load cap on some of the BMW's had exceeded 500lbs.
Yes, the Tiger is pretty comfortable at most speeds, though you do get a bit more wind than a fully-faired bike. Plus where the Scrambler may feel jarring at times, 1-up or 2-up, the Tiger would be much less so.

If you need a bike with a lot of payload check out the older Concours, mine was rated well above the Wing and it also handled the weight better than the wing. Sorry but don't remember the exact numbers but if you go to COG I'm sure someone can tell you what they are. Sadly my wife did not like the Connie, too much vibration for her, vibration never bothered me though. My 03 Tiger doesn't handle a heavy load real well (to be fair I have never altered the suspension settings as they work well for just me) but the ride is cushy, my wife loves the Tiger but can't ride on back all day as she is too cramped (tall w/long legs).

One thing to remember with the BM'S is that although they state that they carry over 500lbs they are notorious for busting rear shocks even when new fully loaded.
I know alot of you guys have changed there rear shocks to Hagon or wp but from what I remember most of this was due to the lack of adjustment on the oem shock and I can't remember anyone with a Tiger saying they have broke there rear?

I cant speak for the 07/08 Tiger, but my 02 worked very well riding 14,000 two-up and 110 pounds of luggage. Yes, I installed a new shock aftermarket Penske shock with the external adjustments just like the original. The stock shock is ok for smooth roads but with the passenger and additional luggage weight, it will not perform well under rough conditions, pot holes roads and the like. I installed a Corbin seat which made the difference in comfort. Riding in the saddle for 8-9 hours in 100 degree heat was not problem.
