Heated Clothing drained the battery

I ride with a passenger in cold weather. On a recent trip in Yellowstone, at 28 degreesF, all the heated equipment was on and the battery experienced a real drain electrically. I had to push the bike off one time after a brief stop for photos. I have the Triumph heated grips, I wear a heated vest and my girlfriend has a heated jacket. I have tried to determine the power drain on the system from all of the electrical users. 2002 955i alternator output according to the manual is 40amps @ 12v yields 480watts of power. I have calculated all the watts from the headlights, instrument lights, tail lights, turn signals (assuming I was turning), heated grips and clothing, but have no information on the requirements of the electric fuel pump or the actual power useage of the engine firing system.

Does anyone know the data on the engine power useage (spark firing system) and the electric fuel pump?

Additionally, can the alternator be upgraded or replaced to produce a higher output?

Electrosport does make a slightly higher output atlernator:

I don't have the nominal engine management power usage, but would suggest getting a voltage meter of sorts to monitor your battery's condition. I like these:

http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/...r-p-16951.html

You can get something similar for much cheaper at any auto parts store. With a meter of this type, you can 'watch' and see how much drain is occuring on your battery. Too much drain, turn something off. I, too, use heated grips, and a heated jacket, along with a GPS - and haven't had any trouble. Only one heated jacket though.

Good luck.

i have a 05 tiger and have been concerned about voltage also. i put a meeter on the battery and it had 14v at idle. i turned on the heated grips and it dropped a little then i turned on my piaa driving lights and the battery was discharging under 3000rpm. so as long as i kept riding all was ok. i was going to add an electric vest to the mix but haven't scrapped up the extra cash.

Thanks cbctc6.....

I have contacted Electrosport and it just so happens they are redesigning the Tiger stator and should have it ready for sale by the middle of February08with a much higher output than the factory stator. I will keep the forum posted on the progress.

My new GPS will have be capable of monitoring the battery voltage so I will be able to keep an I on the power drain of all the electrical devices.

I've read that the charging system isn't charging under 3000 rpm. My GPS monitors voltage and when I'm running PIAAs, vest and grips my voltage gets low. If I up the rpms, I'm good.
