Superfour, I would suggest getting used to it. The dirty brown colour of your pipes can be cleaned and polished with many different products, but as soon as it rains again, you'll be back where you started - dirty brown. I've done mine with Briteshine, 0000 grade steel wool, all kinds of steel polish, and even painted them heat proof black, and they always end up brown after a short while. Some people get them powder coated with good results, but it's not shiny.
The brake pedal seems to be normal, I find it similar to you, but don't have to lift my foot to operate it.
Perhaps get yourself a manual, they're worth it in spades in the end.
Enjoy your new toy!
