Well, I noticed coolant leaking a month or two ago on my '99 885 Tiger and saw the weep hole of the water pump was putting out the coolant as far as I could tell. I replace the water pump and then noticed a smaller pool of coolant forming only when the engine was cold and warming up. The drip would go away after the engine was up to operating temp.

Further inspection revealed a leak near the exhaust header so I figured the head gasket had gone bad. I took it to the shop last week to get it replaced. Fortunately I'm due for a valve check, oil change, spark plug change, coolant change so I'm not to disappointed. Anyone have other suggestions on mods while the bike is torn down? I'm already looking at $500 or so for the current work so I don't want to sink a lot more into it at the time.

I had a slight leak on the right side head gasket. They ended up having to machine the head. Not sure how that is determined but it may be a factor on your repair.

Get the head decked anyway while it's out, even if you don't need it....mmmm....power...

I've heard this spoken of in hushed tones in dark corners of some pretty shady pubs...but never actually read a first hand account of someone doing it. I think it raises hp to like 150 and drops the weight about 100lbs

When the service manager told me that I will notice a difference in power, it didn't occur to me this is what he meant. He said it in a very approving tone. Thanks for point this out.

I wonder if you needed a different tune because of it...ever had the bike on a dyno since having it done?

Just got the bike out of the shop tonight. I'm going to run a few hundred miles up pretty quick and get it back in for a check. I'll ask them when I return the bike.

It's very unlikely enough was shaved to make any noticable difference. In my experience (of working several years in an engine shop), you have to take quite a bit off before you get any noticiable compression performance benefits. To true a head only usually takes a few thou'.
