Rear Brake Pads

Not wishing to enter into a 'use of brakes' thread and I admit, I am a big user of the rear brake. However, the rear pads on my 06 are worn out at just less than 5000 miles.

The rear pads on my works 12RT, with abuse, last longer than that. Seems that a 6000 mile service interval is a little optimistic for the Tiger.

I don't 'overuse' the rear brake, but still had to replace the pads, although it was at 15k miles. Fronts are still fine.
??
I think a lot more 'crap' gets in the rear, so to speak...especially off-road.

That does seem a bit excessive, but i guess if you are a little hard on them it could be about right. If you are using the back brake alone then that sort of mileage would make sense.

I use my rear brake all the time, but only to settle the back end down before i bring the fronts in then i let off the rear. I find it helps stop the dive a fair bit.

The rear wheel also does get covered in krud much more than the rear so grit and stuff is going to get in there.

Like all things, if you treat your brakes to a regular check over, they should be ok. The rear caliper on the Tiger has been known to seize where owners have not kept the pins clean and copper greased.

My '06 rear pads were changed at the first service, 4,000 miles!!!!!!!! BY THE DEALER. It is an 'easy money' thing to do at a dealer service. Now, I'm not suggesting for one minute that we are being ripped off............................................... .........

My rear pads were done at 11,000kms, by me, because I noticed they were getting thin. In actual fact, the outer pad (against the piston) was worn to almost metal, the inner pad was only about 60% worn.

Since then I have used EBC pads, and made sure the pins are all lubed up, this means the pins the pads sit on, plus the sliding pins that allow the caliper to float.

Although the original pads were almost down to the metal, the wear was very even on both pads.

I've installed EBC replacements, so I'll keep an eye on them.

Could someone let me know what the torque figure is, for the caliper mounting bolts on a 06 Tiger? Thanks

Mine are completely worn out at 15,000 miles.

And the rear pistons are seized solid.

These calipers need regular maintenance.
I've just looked mine over when replacing the discs and I found that the copper grease I had put on the "sliding caliper pins" had gone hard and prevented the caliper aligning with the disc causing uneven wear of the pads as described by some above. I, therefore, cleaned it all out and have used low melting point grease instead. We'll see how that fairs but, after their thorough clean up, the brakes now feel better than new.
