Dipstick...

Is this what your dipsticks look like? the XX's at the bottom? That is where the oil level should be correct? Not the little space above them right? Pic should be attached, I hope. Sorry for the blurr...

Hi Blockhead !! the MAX oil level is the at the top of the XX. do not fill above that level or it will overflow up the breather pipe into the airfilter, not good !!

lXXl==========l- < dipstick !!

the bike should be on its wheels ( not on centre stand ) on level ground and as upright as you can get it. the dipstick should be screwed right in and out again to get a proper reading.

hope this makes sence !!

He is right according to the method Triumph recommend. But, the thread on the dipstick is the same length as the IXXI marks so if you just rest the dipstick on the cases and the oil touches the lower mark then it's at the top level. Just makes checking a bit quicker.

Thanks dudes. The reason I was checking is because after my 6K service last week, they over filled it past the top of the next little section above the XX line. I drained about 6-8 oz of oil and it is still above the XX and at the top of the next small section without the XX's. I'll drain some more when I get home from work.

Another problem I'm noticing now is upon first start of the day, she is having a tough time getting to idle. For a couple of seconds, it's like the gas is having a hard time getting a good flow. Do you think the oil has overflowed and is impeding the airflow? Since they said the coolant was a little low, I wonder if they took the tank off to check the level in the radiator and didn't get all the connections snug when they put it back on...

Block, mine's always had a strange cold start since new. It starts, runs at 1500 rpm for about 30 seconds, then drops way low to about 900 for about 2 minutes. The dealer said "they all do that" of course....... however it's not presenting any problems at all when it's on the road, so I've not worried about it. It's an 06, with a stock pipe and TOR tune.

Block, have you followed the exacrt procedure in the handbook for checking the oil? You probably have but just in case: Must have the bike level & on it's wheels (though you can level the bike on the centre stand by using blocks of wood under the wheels), run the engine to normal operating temp until the fan comes on then another minute or so, stop the engine & wait TEN MINUTES for the oil to drain down.

Get any of these wrong and you could get a faulty reading.

Jon,

I usually check it cold, like first thing in the morning. I'll check it today when I get home from work and let it sit for 10 minutes. Since I didn't do it last night like I was planning...
I have learned to check it with side stand up on both wheels as level as I can make it. I just don't know how much danger with slightly over filled, it will cause. If it is still a little over full I'll drain a little out to get it to the top of the XX anyway.

KK,

My 06 didn't start doing this until after the 6K service. This morning the first start fizzled but second hit on the button and she lit right up. I will need a new back tire very soon, so I'll take it to the dealer for a new Anakee & have them do a little warranty check on the starting...

does popping it on the center stand create that much difference. i have not been sufficently bored to check if there is a difference between center stand and leveling the bike on the center stand.
the suggestion of putting it back in without screwing it down was helpful...thanks

I've tried rocking it backwards & forwards (rear wheel off the deck then front wheel) and I have to say the difference in level wasn't perceptible to me.

I am not disputing what is in your handbook in England; however, in my handbook in the USA, AND in my service manual, the checking procedure does NOT state to let it sit for 10 minutes after running before checking the oil level. Both my handbook and the service manual state that one should wait 3 minutes after stopping the engine before checking the oil.

Are we talking about the 1050 service procedures? I am only talking of the 1050...I have NO knowledge of prior year Tigers.
