Question Rear shock removal

After only 6 months my Hagon shock is leaking and I need to remove it. Trouble is the pivot pin in the swinging arm is not coming out easily.

I seem to remember from the last time it siezed that it only comes out in one direction, but I can't remember which.

Can anyone help?

You do mean the lower shock bush and not the swing arm spindle do you?
if so:

I asked a very similar question recently. As far as I can tell it doesn't really matter which side you belt it from but from the left (that's left when seated on the bike) gives easier access.

My initial problem was not having a nice soft brass drift and fear of hitting it too hard. Eventually I used a socket and extension bar which was just the right size and hit it very hard with a big hammer. many times.

The bush is very hard and I didn't damage mine with this method.

Didn't do the socket much good tho.

good luck

John

It's Out

Thanks John,

Bush removed with not too much violence. 6 months ago when I fitted the new shock I greased everything properly, and I don't use a pressure washer (actually not much of any sort of washer). The pin was without any sort of grease and if I'd left it over winter I'm sure it would have siezed up good & proper.

Moral is that thes b'stard pins should be greased at ealst every 6000m service. Why don't Triumph specify this?

This is what I told jgm.......

I've had the rear swingarm out twice in the last couple of weeks. See the thread "She Busted!" to see why! Both times I drove the bush out from the left, using a 3/8" socket extension as the drift. It's just a bit smaller, and a bit softer than the bushing. It took some serious smacking with a good sized hammer to get it going, and was lots easier - but not real easy - the second time. The first time I removed the exhaust, a real pain with the panniers. The second time I took the swingarm pivot out first and was able to move the swingarm to the rear to get more room to work on the shock bush. It even gave enough clearance to drive it from the right without removing the exhaust if I wanted to. I can probably now R&R the swingarm in less than an hour! But I don't plan on doing it anytime soon! Too much fun!
