Clunky 1050 Tranny Anyone?

I have an 07' Tiger that seems to really clunk into gear. I have 2k miles on it, and shifting into 3rd is especially "CLUNKY." The bike is great, but I'm a bit concerned I could be harming the gearbox. Maybe the transmission will "bed-in" with more miles. The clutch seems to be working just fine, so I'm eliminating that from the equation. Any thoughts or similar concerns on your gearboxes??

I ride a bonnie, so I have had a lot of problems with the Tiger in the "smooth shifting department". I have assumed the problem is me, and I have worked on trying to get a smoother combo between the throttle (FI is very unforgiving, here, IMHO) and the clutch. I up-shifted for a few weeks without the clutch, concentrating on the throttle, and believe it or not, the shifting was very smooth. It only takes a minute movement of the twist-grip to get a very significant rpm drop--very different from the bonnie. I still have a long ways to go with the syncing of the clutch and the throttle, but I find the shifting very smooth at much higher rpm's. I also found the shifting to be smooth at all rpms if I used only the clutch and didn't move the throttle.

With my 1050 Speed Triple, it did take time for the gearbox to smooth out; but at 2000 miles, especially if you're using the recommended oil, it should already be showing improvement.

As for the clutch, do at least check the free play at the lever. Even a little excess slack beyond spec makes shifting clunkier.

Have to agree

I own a Thruxton and an Tiger and I agree that the 07 Tiger has a much more clunky shift action. Compared to two 900 Daytona's that I previously owned, the 07 Tiger is just about the worst shifting of all when new.

However, don't give up hope just yet. When brand new mine was virtually unrideable and certainly miserable to ride in town. Now with just over 1000 miles and with fresh semi-synthetic Motul, the transmission is getting to the point that I don't notice it anymore. Still not as slick as the Thruxton, and not close to recent Yamaha's and Honda's that I've owned, but acceptable on what is otherwise, just about the best bike I've ever owned.

morning ride

Thanks for the feedback gang. I went on a 120 mile ride this morning and believe the "clunkiness" may be linked to the throttle/clutch/shifting action. I swear I think it's improving the more I try to synch up those actions. I just don't remember having the same issue on my Sprint RS or FZ1, but the more I read, the more I believe it's a characteristic of the new Tiger. No worries, it was still an absolute blast this morning!

Wink

Tigers of all size are very sensitive to chain slack. My 1050 seems more sensitive than my 955 but only about town. When really giving it stick all is perfect.. Ahem
