07 Tiger Instrument Cluster Issues
All – I’ve been having some intermittent dash problems on my Tiger or late – the Trip Meter button wouldn’t cause the display to toggle between Trip 1, @, and Total, as it should -- while the problem would come and go, the other two buttons seemed to function normally –
The problem is no longer intermittent (grin), meaning that all three of the buttons have ceased to function – happily, the default display seems to be the Total Mileage on the odometer, and currant Time on the Trip Computer Display –
I’ve been riding through some rain of late, and, last week, while going through some heavy, but not Biblical, showers, both the Trip Meter and the Trip Computer would scroll rapidly through all their display options – fun to watch, but a little disconcerting . . . .
I finally got a chance to strip down the front of the bike last night, and found the problem . . . .
After pulling the instrument cluster from the bike, and opening it up, there were signs of corrosion on the solder points for all three pushbutton switches, as well as green residue on the inside of the cluster housing, down near the switches themselves . . . . . when I pulled off the front fairing, I notices that there was a rubber boot designed to seal the plug into the instrument circuit card from moisture – the rubber seal was about half an inch from the plug itself, and sealing absolutely nothing –
It’s clear that water got into the instrument housing, and pooled down near the switches (lowest portion of the cluster), shorting them out (this is likely what led to the light show scrolling through the display options) – all three switches are toast, although everyting seems to work if you short between the solder points for the switches – it may be time to rig remote switches, as I’m really not in the mood to leave the bike at the dealers’ for a couple of weeks . . . .
The Moral of the Story is, check that rubber boot, gents – I’d not been in that neighborhood before, and I’m guessing it had been mis-installed from the get go . . .
