955 Speedo problem

Hi,

The speedo on the bike has stopped working!
I was reading with interest previous posts on this problem and was interested in the post from Big Stripey. The tabbed washer (for want of a better description) that sits on the shaft within the front wheel hub does not turn due (I assume) to it being locted but floats, is it possible that this drive can move back and dis-engage from the pick off sensor? The bike runs fine and the wiring loom is intact upto the clock from the front wheel.

Any suggestions?

The tabbed washer should not move at all it should be held in place by two tabs at the rear that locate in the wheel hub, and the two larger front tabs locate in the ceramic sender unit, its that that actually turns creating an electrical impulse that the clock deciphers as speed.

Be careful replacing the wheel and locating the tabs in the ceramic unit, as it’s easy to get them in the wrong place and when you tighten up you spindle you smash the ceramic unit.

These ceramic units also wear quite badly in the centre if they are not well greased, so check for that while you have got it apart, but I suspect yours isn’t working due to the two rear tabs not being located correctly or broken.

if you need a new unit, you are looking at about £45.00 from a dealer for a complete unit.

Thank you

I have had another look at the assembly and checked the engagement of the drive lugs, all seems to be correct so I have ordered a new speed sensor. Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again,

As you saw from my post some time back, the ferrus metal alloy stator that actually creates the doppler effect can wear down over time. Mine wore down quickly because i put the front wheel back in too quickly and check that everything was bedded down properly and the tabbed washer took care of it for me !

Being a tight wad, i fixed it with the thick 'o' ring and it still works fine 20,000 miles later......result !!

When you checked it all out, was the ferrouns metal sleeve cracked at all ? this can cause problems too ??

Just a thought....

Question Speedo just stopped working!

Can I crash in onto this thread and tell you all that we were riding along minding our own business and suddenly the speedo drops to zero and stops working, odo and all!

About five miles and maybe five minutes later it gives a couple of flickers and bingo, back on she comes never to off again by the time we got home about 45 minutes later.????? What gives, it acted the way a thermal cut-out relay behaves, do Tigers have any of these??

I do not like mysterious unexplained electrical activities, this sort of thing is not confidence building at all!

Ambient temperatures were low, snow along both sides of the road but not on it, traveling along at 5,000rpm at about 70-80mph, so I turned on the hand warmers, paid for them may as well try them.

Could not really tell the difference on position 2 (bottom end of switch down) so clicked to the top position, it was after this that I noticed the speedo was not working!

Tried out all the other electrics to see if they were on, all seemed to be OK!

Turned off the heated grips and continued on, just using the rev counter to ride by.

About five minutes later the speedo gives a couple of flicks and then away it goes again, seemingly, no more problems!

So what the hell is that all about? Any ideas or suggestions?

We have just completed a 200mile round trip in very cold and very wet conditions but the weather was perfect at the time the speedo played it's little trick.

I am one of those strange people who just love riding in rain and believe me, yesterday, it "rained" and "rained" and "rained"!

The bike has about 5,500 miles on it now and I was just thinking (as we rode along) what a bloody fantastic bike it is, suits our needs perfectly!

Next thing this little trick pops up! ****!! (dam, oh, I can say that one but not this **** one!) Ha ha how quaint!(lol)

Guy's ??? Any suggestions?? "Please"! Cheers John

PS: The bike is a blue 2007 Triumph Tiger (06) 955i, with 5554 miles on the odo!

Embarrassed old biker!

I have found the speedo drive on the "front wheel" despite my salesman insisting it comes from the gearbox, wish I had never posted now. Cheers (embarrassed) John.

Thumbs up Result

Hi,
Thank you for the responses. After fitting the new assembly the speedo now works! Best part of £80 for a new unit, assuming that I have located it (after a confidence check of puposefully misaligning it) correctly I am hoping it lasts longer than the last one. Interested to establish where and how the o ring sits for future reference?

Thanks again,

Bandanna D
