Beating the coolant spewing horse again

I am curious, did any of you have a coolant spew early in your Tiger's life
then not have it happen again until about a year later? Because that is what
is happening to me. I had a spew at the gas station las summer on a particularly hot day after riding home from work. It didn't happen again until
this week, twice. Not a flood but definitely spillage from the front, most likely
around the top where the hoses go in, and at the over flow hose hanging
behind the right foot peg.
Is it possible the crossed over hoses are not being really a problem until now? Or there is something else like a thermostat that needs replacing since I think it runs hotter than it should at times? It's time for the annual inspection sticker so I think I'm going to have the dealer check my cooling system for
som warranty work!

The radiator caps on these bikes don't appear to be a lifetime item. Fortunately they're pretty cheap. Swap in a new radiator cap, as they are frequently to blame for Puking Tigers.

Well, I feel real stoooopid now, I had too much fluid! My mechanic said to keep it at the minimum level or slightly below. By the time I got to the shop
the level was to the top of the overflow conainer! Way to much. He siphoned some out and going home it actually ran even cooler than it ever
has this time of year.

I guess over full can keep it running hooter than it should. They must think I'm a real rookie there!

Remember that if your pipes are crossed then the fluid in the expansion tank doesn't return to the engine...... And the temperature sensor will read under the "real" temperature if it isn't in water.....

Not to worry you though, I would however recommend that you take the petrol tank off and check that you actually have the engine itself full of coolant, that the pipes are the right way round, and as others have said a new cap won't break the bank.

Mine needed 1.5 litres after it had been "serviced" by a dealer

So that means the fluid wouldn't fluctuate in the overflow tank if they are
crossed, right? It would remain constant if there was no circulation.

No, it would go up in the expansion tank OK but wouldn't return to the engine when it cooled down as it would be sucking air.

This is my attempt at a sketch showing the layout of the expansion tank which I did for another place.

Excellent graphic! That's what I was thinking too. So, when my fluid
was fluctuating from under min line to over max line the hoses should be correct.

You see what I'm trying to avoid don't you? :-) Taking off the tank and looking for myself...

Go on, you know you want to. The best bit is taking it for a blast to use up the petrol so the tank isn't too heavy. Although perhaps not today, looking out at the rain......
