I have developed an oil leak at the shift lever post. It started as one drop after every third or forth ride to work but has now let go and is a real leak. I found one old thread about this same issue doing a search (I love this board). The fix seems to be replacing the oil seal. It seemed a rather straight forward job but I get nervous when I am into new territory. The procedure seems to be:
remove shift lever
remove split ring and washer
pry out old seal
tap in new seal
replace removed components

The old post said no oil came out during this job when the bike is on the center stand. Does this sound right? Anything else I should know about installing the new seal?

Hey Sonoma,

Before you do this job, are you absolutely certain it's the gear shift shaft?

Reason I ask is that I have a leak in my neutral light switch, which screws in just above the gear lever. At first I thought it was the gear lever, but on closer inspection it was the neutral light switch. I've yet to be able to seal it permanantly, but am working on it.

I hear cleaning the thread properly, then smearing a good quality thread sealant and torquing to the correct setting will cure it, I just don't have the time yet, so it's to the dealer to fix - for the third time.....

I am fairly sure it is coming from the shifter as that it seems clean enough above the post. I will check again armed with your info.

Definitely coming form the shift post. I have also answered one of my questions as that no oil is leaking now that I am on the main stand. Now my only concern is removing the old seal once my dealer gets the new one (1 week wait).

Are you sure its not coming off the chain and sprocket onto the gear lever spindle?

If it is, you just have to take the cover off and clean everything every now and then.

I had that problem on another bike (Honda) I will go out and check my bike in the morning and see if it can happen on the Tiger!

I am new to Triumphs, have to relearn all the little quirks.

I'm not sure about anything

. I picked up the oil seal form the dealer but didn't install it yet. The reason is that the oil leak is gone. I realized when I went to remove the shift lever that the retaining ring was out of its groove and the trust washer was loose. I snapped everything back in place and cleaned it up, no leak. I just did this 2 nights ago and took her out for good run last night with no leaks seen this morning. I rode her to work today and she waiting for me in the ferry parking lot. Hopefully there is not a big puddle of synthetic under her

I did remove the sprocket guard and cleaned out all of the crude in there as well. I also checked every nut and bolt I could find just in case. Seems like every time I do this I can find at least one loose fastener somewhere.
