Dealer was looking at my high reading fuel gauge/permanent low fuel light (spot the contradiction) the other day and made some observations about the state of my ECU.

Mechanic explained that there just happens to be a small hole in the undertray lef from the cast which sits directly under the ECU and just out of the protection of the hugger.

Every new Tiger he's plugged this with silicon sealant but he says on mine the water and crud has been getting in and the ecu is now a little corroded.

He's pointing at this as being the most likely cause of the fuel gauge mis reading. The triumph diagnostic device is saying the current being sent to the fuel gauge is too high.

Does this sound reasonable ?

It was given a bit of a clean with compressed air and for 2 days the low fuel light stayed off. Now it's back.

They're quite happy to swap an ecu from another bike to check, they just didn't have the time. They only have one Tiger left in stock so I don't know whether to just buy a secondhand one if I can find one just in case.

It does sound feasible. I've noticed quite a few holes in the "mudguard" which I've filled with gaffer tape or silicon as otherwise it gets messy under the seats and as you may have found could result in corrosion.

Is the mechanic talking about corrosion of the box (which I can't see causing a problem) or the connectors (which I could)?

No the box looks fine which is why I was surprised.

He said if I took the lid off and had a look I'd be horrified at the state of the inside.

Going to get them to swap units and spot the difference, everything on the bike runs fine apart from the fuel gauge, this could be the start of things goind wrong.

I either cough for a 2nd hand one now, or just gamble on it making through until next year when I plan to change it anyway, it'll probably go on ebay.

My 2003 Tiger suffered fatal ECU faults luckily within warranty. A new ECU was quoted as £1000. The same explanation was given at the dealership and they sealed around the new one with sealant. Perhaps they should have done this when I bought it! Although Triumph did replace it, they said that they had never experienced this before - aye right! I also fitted a hugger after that and got one on my 06 right away.

It may get worse before it get's better.

Haddington ?

Do you know 'Dusty', our RS owning Rat colleague ?

Must be able to get a Fife/Lothians Tiger/Triumph run sorted surely ?

It is £1000 for a new one or £150 from TriumphAnt, so not necessarily that painful.

The joy of corrosion is that you never know where it's going to strike, for me it might be the fuel gauge, but could easily have been the fuel injection or headlights or something more critical.

No we exchanged mails a while back but have never seen him or the RS. feels like a triumph free zone in Haddington!

I have a voucher for triumphant if you are interested, Can't recall the value but i think it is coming up for expiry i think, i will look it out.

Yes a local run would be good. Went to keilder at weekend with TW Rat, first outing ever. Was fun despite weather.
