I have an overheating problem.

I've changed the thermostat but it's still happening.

When I stop at lights or end of journey the expansion tank overfills and coolant comes out of what I suspect is an expansion bleed hose inside the right hand leg of the frame. The fan runs but it seems to be coming in late and doesn't stay on for long.
This leads me to believe the temperature sensor is faulty, but where is it?

Is it the same one which is removed to access the thermostat housing? Or is that one for the temperature gauge?

:???: :???: :???:

You may have the notorious crossed over tubes to the expansion tank. The one from the thermostat housing should attach to the union in the tank which has an extension that dips below the coolant level so when the engine cools down it sucks the coolant, rather than air, back. From your reg I'd guess your bike is in the affected range, although it should have been fixed by the dealer (hollow cynical laugh).

It's only just started doing it tho. It's been fine for three and a half years.

There's just one sensor - the ECU controls both the fan and the temperature gauge.

replace the radiator pressure cap. Had the same problem on my 02 Tiger and a new cap cured it

Head gasket

At least I can get the valve clearances checked at the same time, it'll save money on the 24k service.

Bummer, Spud I had the same symptoms about 2K into my 4K trip, but I didn't see any telltale white smoke out of the muffler, so I rode it out without stopping once :-D . Okay, okay, so I strapped a bottle of coolant to the back and just tried to avoid cities. Regardless, I figured it was fan, but ultimately, mine was the thermostat which wasn't telling the fan to kick on appropriately.

Sorry to hear about your HG

Did you see a lot of white smoke out of the muffler, out of curiosity?

Shiny.

I didn't see any white smoke, but then again I wasn't looking for it. My engine oil wasn't emulsified either.

Unhappy

Well, the problem is now sorted. It was the head gasket. Whilst the head was removed I had the valve clearances checked as well seeing as it's coming up to the 24K service. One valve required adjustment.

The cost of all this work???????

£677

I think my next bike won't be a Triumph. They're lovely bikes, but the service costs are just too much.
