Jump-starting won't help me. I didn't even try it. Batt checks out fine, but the charging system isn't putting out more than 11.58volts, at idle, or at revs. Still under warranty, so off to the dealer... dealer... dealer... Oh, the nearest one is 160miles. The dealer in Tulsa has sold out. I guess there are SOME advantages to buying Japanese.

I'm told it'll probably take two weeks. I doan got no car - kids have took 'em all. No running shoes, either. Uh-oh...

Sounds like you're not charging at all. The 11.5 v is the battery voltage and you'd expect it to get lower as the battery drains. You should be more interested in the current output from the alternator (amps). Sounds like there's none.

Maybe you can get the kids to carry you

Diagnosis is a defective stator. Good thing it's under warranty, because - wow - them things is expensive. $400-600 to just fix that. 3-4 days on parts; only be afoot until next week.

Kids got running shoes. I don't know why; they drive to wherever they're going.

Glad for you that it was covered by warranty. At least now you'll be able to drag the kids behind you!

Expect them to order additional parts after the stator gets there. Just a hunch. Let us know how this turns out.

You were quite correct, tyrebyter. Seems I need a regulator, also. It'll be another week on repair. Since a regulator is likely to be bad, when the stator goes (and I asked about this when I dropped it off), wouldn't it have been sensible to have all parts available, when beginning repair? Modern motorcycling, I guess.

When this bike quit on the road, I called my dealer, and he offered no assistance, whatsoever. Visited an old classmate who owns a Yamaha dealership. He said he'd have came picked me up, in about a half hour, no charge. My son has a friend who deals Hondas. They would, likewise, have gotten bike&rider off the road, no charge.

As a guy who uses his bike for transportation, instead of recreation, such service does have a certain appeal, even if their Jap bikes are built out of beer cans and styrene. Triumph could use a little improvement to their warranty, I think.

Okay, I got my bike back. 16 days at the dealership. 176miles away - I hope this thing isn't going to have any recurring problems; that's a long ride home.

The stator was defective, from manufacture. Coil not wound properly, or properly sealed. Cost was zero. Ran like a scalded dawg, all the way home... Uh, just how do dogs git scalded? Anyone know?... I think this bike feels better than I remember. Could be the screwed-up charging system has kept it running at less than optimal, for a long time.

Oh, well. 170+miles, mostly after dark, with temps going into the 40's (degrees, that is), does make me long for a fully-faired bike. If I didn't like this thing so much, I guess I'd trade it for an FJR or an ST or a Goldwing. I can't see myself doing that, though... I just figure I'd miss this bike too much.

Then again, maybe I'm just getting soft.

How dogs get scalded: Big paw on the stove looking for a snack catches the handle of the pot with the hard booiled eggs. Just a guess.
