My fuel gauge does not work now. I get the following error code from Tune Boy.

P0463 Fuel level sensor input above acceptable maximum voltage (shorted high)

If I unplug the sensor I get the same code. Tank is right full. Would the sensor inside the tank be stuck? or could there be a short or break in the line? I get 5 volts at the plug.

Bike has been off the road till now for the winter with low fuel in the tank.

did you also clear error code after you unplugged the sensor ?
Additionally there should be 2 pins in the fuel sensor connector. If you connect voltmeter between them and between each pin and ground what voltage it gives ?

I get 5.04 volts across the terminals when I turn the bike on with it unplugged. I get 1.04 volts with the connector plugged in. 86 ohms across the connector to the the sensor. With that there should not be a broken wire. Yes I did clear the error code. that was the first thing I did as I did have an error code for the fuel pump. That will happen when you have the tank off and turn the thing on.

thanks

gents, i have an 04 tiger whose fuel gauge stays in the red. the low fuel indicator is always on. since this is the first problem i've had with the bike, i don't yet have a manual.

i've looked for the obvious things (connectors, fuses, etc.), but found nothing. please bring me up to speed as to the location of the sensor and where the voltages below can be measured. maybe i'll spot something once pointed in the right direction.

also, is the tune boy essential for troubleshooting? i don't have it. so, i'm guessing that i can't retrieve/clear error codes.

That is about right for empty (IIRC it's around 93). Sounds like you have the same kind of problem I have (it's come back again even though I thought I'd fixed it). So it's back to the trip meter.

Solved the problem by installing a new fuel float. Easy to install by just taking off the 4 bolts that hold the sensor in the tank. More work to get the tank off.
