Hello all, new to your site but I need some help please.

My pal is loaning my his 98 tiger 900 to ride while mine is down and it has a problem with stalling. When it is cold or for less than 15 miles it runs fine. Sometimes it is good for longer but not usuallly. Problem is it stalls, you pull over and wait a couple min. and it fires right back up. Now sometimes after a stall it will cut off and back on while on the gas(not fun in a corner) and sometimes it will stall while coming to a light and start right back up. It acts like it loses spark, but no matter how much gas I give it I cannot flood it so I am assuming it is fuel related. I removed the tank and checked the vent tube, it is clean and clear, I removed the petcock and and it is clean and clear as well. The only mod to the bike is some Yosh slip ons. I got the body work back off and am going to check for spark the next time this happens but if anyone has had a similar problem and can point me in any direction I would be very greatful.

Thanks

Hiya,

Is your Tiger carburated or Fuel Injected? If it's carburated it sounds suspiciously like carburettor icing.

I've never owned one of the carburated tigers so I don't know what kind of provisions are in place to prevent carburettor icing.

I had almost identical symptoms on my GPz when the spur off the cooling system designed to keep the carburettors from icing by piping warm water close to the jets got clogged up.

You say that it acts like it 'loses spark' but reckon it's fuel related.
By 'losing spark' are you saying a sudden, 'switched off' sort of stall, or 'petering out'? If it's sudden, I would look to the ignition pickup 'cos they can fail at high temp and then are ok when they cool off a bit.
I can't say for sure with your model bike as I have no experience of it, but any fuel related issues I have had in the last 20yrs have been variations along the lines of gradual power loss, stutter, stutter, stop, rather than a losing spark sort of feel.
Let me know.

Carb. I like injection much better, I had some off road fun this weekend and dropped the Hoss in the mud. These bikes are hard to pick up solo!

It just quits, no sputtering like it is running out of gas. I have heard about the revolution sensor going bad on these, part is in stock at the local dealer too.

Icing, sorry that is funny. I live in GA, it rarely gets cold enough for my dogs water bowls to freeze!

I thought I was getting some vapor lock so I pulled the tank and checked the vents, petcock etc...Fuel seems ok, I just cant get the bike to flood or smell like gas no matter how much I give it, that is why I thought maybe fuel.

Actually, carbs ice when the temperature is a couple of degrees above freezing but there is high humidity. The carb gets cold because the partial vaporisation of the fuel takes quite a lot of heat.

I had a Honda Dominator that was a pig in that sort of weather but was cured with Silkolene fuel system stuff.

I would be surprised if its fuel related, then. I'm no expert, unlike some guys on here, but I think oyu need to look at electrical reasons for this. Loose battery lead, or, for my money, pick-up sensor. Possibly an ignition coil, but just one failing would give you a misfire, not a dead stop, and two coils would'nt fail together.
Get the hammers out... :hammer:

Tickets, something you may not have thought of. This same issue happened to me on my old Harley. I'd be riding along, then all of a sudden it would quit, no power whatsoever, not even oil or neutral lights.

Once I was on a freeway, and had to try and fire it up again on the move, whilst coasting out of the way of traffic. I left it in gear to help slow me down, but as I touched the key, it fired right back up again.

Problem was a bad ignition switch. I haven't replaced it, just squirted some graphite powder into it and it's been fine ever since.

Hi,
I know that this is probably a little bit to late for your problem, but have you checked the revolutions sensor.
Usually when its life is over, he starts doing that. After riding a while, temperature in the electric system goes up and the sensor (proximity sensor) stops reading. When this happens, the ECU can't read the data it needs and shuts down the bike.

See you,
Xanax
