After changing my oil, I looked in the Haynes to get the torque setting on the plug. It said that if the plug is M14, then the torque is 28Nm, but if it is M22, it's 48Nm (as I remember it).
How do you translate the 'M' sizes to millimeters? My sockets and hex bits are marked '10mm' etc. so I used the lower number to be safe.

Hi!

Pretty easy but I have a problem with imperial measure instead.

M14 bolt is about 14 mm outside threads and M22 is 22 mm.

the M14 and M22 are the sizes of the tread as Anders said not the size of the spanner to fit the head

a M12 bolt has a 19mm head

look at it as a 1/2" BSW would have a 3/4" AF head

14mm is a bit bigger than 1/2 inch and 22mm is a bit smaller than 1 inch

With the smaller ones, I always think of 4mm as 3/16", 8mm as 5/16" and 10mm as 3/8. Not exact at all but it gives me something to relate to.

I'm picking up an original Bonnie at the end of this month. It is going to need a complete overhaul so I'm going to have to buy a whole new set of spanners and learn the sizes!

I think my biggest problem will be matching threads.
