I honestly think this problem is because of the new tune. There are too many of us having different problems since this tune was introduced. Unfortunately we seem to have a lot of different problems but one thing is for sure. A lot of these problems were not there or were certainly not as bad before this new "improved" tune was fitted.

If Mr. triumph is listening, you've ballsed up this one, give me 18 back! It was fine with that one!!!!

Interesting the variation between bikes. I have tune 19 with the offroad can and have a little snatchiness at low speeds on a holding throttle setting. Just a note. I think that this snatchiness has a lot to do with the chain and hub cush drive on Tigers.
The suspension travel is far greater than other Triumphs and the chain is adjusted looser to allow for this movement. This would help explain why an RS appears smoother (apart from different cams and ECU map).

Just out of interest I tried a little experiment

Put the bike in neutral and try and keep the revs between 2000 and 3000 rpm

on my bike this is impossible it was either below 2000 or over 3000 no mater how little I move my hand on the throttle I cant keep it between the 2 points, this could be why the bike surges !

do other tigers do this and if they do are they the ones with the surging problem ?

Dave

I've been reading this thread with interest over the last few weeks and its bringing back bad memories to me. I won't go into the full details as it would be the length of your arm. I bought a new 02 Tiger, worked fine for 6 weeks then started to mis-fire, I'm positive when it happened the engine was only firing on 2 cylinders, riding it was a nightmare, the power would surge in and then go again, great on corners!! When this happened as soon as you pulled the clutch in the bike would stall, it would start again no problem, it would also backfire more on a reduced throttle. If you kept an even throttle in neutral the revs would surge + or - 1000rmp. Over 18 months the bike was in at the dealers for a total of 6 months, every time the bike went back there was no problem, they could never get the problem to re-occur and the diagnostic never registered a fault. I found it happened during a long ride maybe over 300-400 miles and quite often at an increase in altitude. Never got to the bottom of the problem, eventually kicked up so much s..t with threats to dealer and Triumph that I got a new replacement bike at no cost. New bike no problem but still have 18 months of constant fighting with dealer and Triumph as a memory. All the symptoms on this thread were present on my bike but probably more extreme, when the bike started to mis-fire it was positively dangerous. After I got my new bike I was told by Triumph/dealer that it had been a problem with the altitude sensor in the ECU and that after they replaced the complete ECU the bike was fine. No longer my problem I was just glad it had all ended. Despite all this I still think the Tiger is the best bike in its class for the kind of riding I do.

DJR/ipg, it was me that had the knackered altitude sensor on my bike, but i only found out when i went to try and reach the Nurburgring. Essex is pretty flat, so is most of Belgium as you know. It wasn't until i climbed up into the hills that it cam into play.

Glad it was on warranty. it was an £1100 replacement bill...ouch!

Bypass the oxygen sensor and smooth things out in traffic.

Maybe this info will help some of you:

On my new Tiger '05 I have been well impressed with everything except, in traffic:
1. the ultra smooth injection got ratty
2. strange resonances could be felt through the footpegs at part throttle,
3. cutting out in traffic and when decelerating up to roundabouts
- spoilt an otherwise perfect bike. I am comparing with my previous '01 Sprint ST and an '03 Tiger I took a long test ride on. The symptoms were unacceptable and I was either going to fit a Power Commander or sell the bike.

I found out that the oxygen sensor in the exhaust header feeds into the ECU unit, which attempts to achieve a particular fuel/air ratio by leaning out the fuel injection at anything over 2500 rpm and any throttle position less then 30% full open. This is done deliberately to pass emissions tests.

Dynojet supply an oxygen sensor bypass plug-in for lots of bikes which fools the ECU into thinking the air/fuel ratio is perfect and stops trying to lean the mixture. There is one for Triumph 9551 engines. Its only £16 and plugs straight into the wiring harness.

Why do some Triumphs exhibit this more than others ? I am told it is because the oxygen sensors vary in output by +/- 15%, so some bikes are not affected while others are. You can just unplug the oxygen sensor but then your engine management warning light will be ON
permanently.

The man at Dynojet tells me they developed the bypass because even when customers had PowerCommanders fitted, this ECU leaning feature would work against the PowerCommander which was trying to achieve the best fuelling.

See www.dynojet.co.uk/pc/accessories.html (bottom of page).

You don't need to buy a PowerCommander to get the results.

See www.dynojet.co.uk/pc/index.html for the part numbers for different bikes.

I have done 2000 miles now with the bypass ftted. No negative side effects. I noticed the exhaust outlet colour has changed from a white brown to a normal grey.

After fittng this bypass, 1 and 3 are gone and 2 is reduced to acceptable levels (note this is with stock tune and can). I am now very happy with the bike.

Hope this helps some of you. Maybe it won't work with a race can. At £16 its worth a try

Paul

I picked up my '05 tiger a couple of days before going on holiday.

It went straight back to the dealers the next day to get the "engine stalling" problem sorted out. Also it was very hard to start when hot.

Reason I was told it that the '05s have a different fuel system that has resulted in a slightly different fuel pressure at the injectors. On a small number of bikes this has caused a problem in that at idle it was "over fueling".

The delaer had the bike while I was away and now it is running just fine. I understand Triumph sent a ECM with some "different numbers" in it to fix the problem.

This injection stuff is all new to me as I had a steamer before :-D

I cant believe you need to buy an aftermarket box just to make your Triumph run as it should, especially on an 05 machine.

I am disgusted at Triumph, I had to pay £32 to make both headlights work, I would not have minded having only one headlight on at a time except that you could see sod all in the dark unless you used the pass light button.

Mine is going back in today to sort out the surging, they are going to try another ECU.

I wonder why Triumph went broke in the 70's !!!!
