The weird thing is that last week I took my bike to the dealer to check the known cooling liquid leaking problem and he gave me a 955RS for a couple of days.
I was really amazed of how smooth the engine was. Exactly the same engine (different camshafts I guess), but the difference in power delivery is huge.
Soooooo smooth and nice ......
When I got Lucy back, I noticed how annoying that kicking at 2500/3000 rpm was.
I found on the internet a re-mapping tool called Tune-edit. Among the many things you can do, this thingy allows you to re-map the engine ECU.
www.tuneboy.co.uk

Has anyone used it, or heard something good or bad about it?

IMO Tiger doesn't really need any extra hp but Tune-edit could possibly correct some flat spots in the power/torque curves.

Thanks

Nondas

Ah,

The problem I have with my 2002 Tiger is Kicking at about 2000 -4000 revs in any gear.

This is really annoying when filtering as it equates to 10->40 miles an hour and spoils what is otherwise a well sorted out bike.

From the sound of this thread all tigers do it to some degree when on the later engine maps.

As 30% of my riding is in traffic I don't find that very acceptable, are Triumph doing any thing to resolve the problem? do they know about it ?

Sorry to rant

Dave

Im still puzzled by this apparent problem???

I have tried and tried to recreate the conditions you all describe. I have not found anything like it yet? Not to say of course that it does'nt exist.

In that low rev range you are talking about, what gears is this happening or is it all gears?

Is it when you have throttled off and gone back on the gas? or is it at a steady throttle setting?

Have any of you tried riding in the same conditions but in one gear lower i.e. 4th instead of 5th at 30 mph etc could it be that the engine is labouring in too high a gear ?(don't want that to sound patronising, i'm just scratching for ideas)

The only time i suffered any real kicking in the past was when i was at low speed and opening the throttle. I traced this to a knackered cush drive inside the rear hub. It had worn and created a gap between the fins inside the hub, making it snatch when the power was applied.

But this is unlikely with such new bikes surely?.

Keep us posted please with your findings

Cheers

Hi BigStripey

I have tried this now loads of times always with the same results
enter Blackwall Tunnel queue from the south or the north

ride between Killer white transit vans and BMW drivers on the mobile

traffic heavy 3rd gear approx 20 MPH maintain speed between 18 and 25 mph with small movements of the throttle

what happens is the bike cant decide if it wants to accelerate or decelerate the feeling is not bar shakingly bad but more like waves at the beach first pushing you forward then holding you back

I have tried dropping to second same result and going up to 4th and 5th same result

on my bike I can still feel the problem at 40 MPH but it is much worse at 20->30 and seems worse still when its hot and muggy but that could be me running out of Patience.

I thought it might be me moving the throttle so I have tried riding holding the bar by the end weight and locking the throttle with 1 finger that way I am not moving the twist grip as the bike goes over a bump it still does it

I have adjusted the chain in case it was chain slap
I tried BP new super unleaded, no difference

I can get the bike to surge properly by selecting too higher gear and then trying to accelerate

I have ridden many bikes over the years from ratty 2 strokes to 6 cylinder monsters but this is the first one to make me sea sick.

Sleeper88,

I can picture the scene vividly!

There is definately a problem there, fuel mapping has got to be wrong, it shouldn't be anything like that at all.

Time to have a deep and meaningful exchange of views with your dealer me thinks....

One of the sensors is definately feeding duff gen back to the e.c.u. The trouble is which one ??There are seven of the little blighters to go after

Whatever, that is definately for your dealer (or another one by the sounds of it!!) to sort out.

Keep the faith, Tigers are not meant to be like that.

Would the fact that the bike pops on deceleration with the throttle closed give any clues ?

Fuel obviously being burnt in the exhaust! or is it just down to valve overlap?

It would sound Awesome with a race can

Has anyone got a dealer they would recommend? or if a dealer watches this forum are you prepared to take on a warranty claim!

I live in North Kent so a good dealer in Inverness would not be a lot of help

Sleeper88,
You don't know how reassuring it was to read your post. So I'm not going insane after all! Your description of the problem is spot on. I particularly like the wave analogy.
The easiest test is to hold it at 30mph in third or 40mph in 4th, use a smooth flat road, and feel the sea-sickness through the seat of your pants!
I'll be continuing my quest with the dealer who I feel is smiling at me through gritted teeth. Keep you posted.

Sleeper,

That popping sound DOES sound awesome with the race can on

That is nothing to worry about, it is a characteristic of the fuel injection mapping on the Tiger.

I see you are in North Kent, I have a similar problem in tracking down a trustworthy dealer, hence my 150 mile round trip to On Yer Triumph!

Have you tried Boyer's in Greenwich ?

Hi Guys,

sorry I have not replayed for a while but I have been waiting to get the bike booked back in and then give it a fair test after wards.

the mechanic has balanced the throttle bodies, and re set one of the sensors as it was out of spec,
however I still have the problem and now it has started raining it has become a big issue, trying to ride smoothly round roundabouts when the engine is applying power to the back wheel then taking it away every second or so is getting dangerous.

I am going to write a letter to the dealers and copy Triumph asking for the problem to be resolved or replace the bike

I think that is fair as it has been in 4 times for the same problem and it is now a safety issue.

I am sorry to say , but I too am happy to hear from others with this same problem. 05 with unknown tune but my bike also surges around 3500 rpm.. Tried just holding the engine at that rpm ,in neutral and it does not want to run smoothly. Anyone else tried this with theirs? :???:
