I recently took my '03 in to have a minor service performed, and since collecting it I have noticed a fairly strong petrol smell in the garage every morning. The dealer mentioned that a fuel fitting had to be replaced because of a leak (although I never smelled petrol from the bike before the service - at least, not as strongly) and the invoice reveals that I had "BT1240868 - CONNECTOR FU" supplied and fitted at a cost of about 11gbp.

Would this be the red coupling in the picture? The drip of fuel on the underneath of it is quite apparent, so I'd like to know if that's the part they replaced because then I can be certain whether the responsibility for fixing the leak is mine or theirs :-)

Cheers,
Tim.

Both the red and white fittings are supposed to be metal. They were plastic originally and there was a recall and replaced for free (at least in the states). There is an O-ring on the fitting which probably got nicked on installation. It should be replaced. When I replaced my fitting I didn't cut the end of the hose back to new rubber and it leaked between the hose and the fitting. I cut the hose back and re-installed to fix that. Whatever the problem I think it should be the dealers to repair.

I would question why they charged for fitting the parts covered under a recall(I am sure they are the same bits - someone else confirm??)

It was my understanding (I have been wrong before) that the recall replaced teh parts with plastic parts from a slightly altered mold. My memory is hazy but I think metal parts are still aftermarket. I put the metal ones on prior to the recall.

It is true that the o-rings tend to get scratched up causing slow leaks. Get the dealer to fix it.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys. I'd seen the other threads mentioning leaky fuel connectors and was fairly certain it was the same issue, but just wanted to make sure I had my facts straight before stepping into the dealer and asking for replacement seals!

Having just had a look at the picture again though, I notice that there is no pipe pushed on to the fitting on the fuel pressure regulator, however there is one illustrated in the Haynes manual (although the Hanes manual only covers models up to the FI 885 Tiger). Has this been omitted on later models, or is it something which may have been disturbed whilst the tank was off at the service?

Apologies if this question is also a duplicate, I seem to remember somebody mentioning some fuel pipework which was only fitted to earlier models and omitted from later models, but I can't seem to find the post now :???:

Thanks again,
Tim.

There is no tube connected to the fuel pressure regulator on the '03 tiger, your setup is correct. I'm not sure what year they did away with it.

There are three possible materials for that fitting: plastic, zinc and nickle plated brass. Triumph built their fuelies with plastic on both the hose side and the tank (female) side. The recall was for the hose side fitting and the replacement was zinc. If you're lucky like me, your tank side fittings also broke. I ended up replacing all the fittings on both bikes with the brass ones. They are not available through Triumph, but PJ's Triumph in Albuquerque gets them from the manufacturer. Keep spare O-rings with you since they nick easily when inserting the fitting.

P.S. There are two hose sizes: 1/4" or 5/16" depending on model with coresponing fittings.

Metal fuel fittings seem to be popular and readily available in the USA. Where can i buy the metal ones in the UK?...
