I'm just finishing my second tank of petrol and seem to be getting about 140 miles per tank on my 9000 mile 2004 tiger. This does not seem right, surely I should be getting 200 miles or over? Since I have had the bike I have had a slight smell of petrol, most noticeable at start up. The only problem is I have not been able to find any visable leaks.

Is it possible the breather pipe is blocked and petrol is being going into the airbox? I have to use the bike today for a trip into London and I'm a bit worried I might be damaging the engine.

I'll check with my dealer later today to see what he has to say. As he is not that local I would much prefer to resolve the problem myself if possible.

Cheers

Paul

Depends what you mean by finishing a tank of petrol. My '99 will go onto reserve at about 130-150 miles with town riding, but that doesn't take into account the very large reserve. If it is just the reserve warning light coming on at 140 then don't worry too much - it will probably get atleast another 60 miles before running dry. Have a look at how much petrol you put in when you fill up - I normally use about 1 litre for ten miles riding and it is a 24 litre tank.

You should indeed be getting more, depending on riding type.
I get 180-190 to the warning light coming on, which equates to about 45mpg.
This is in mixed riding, about 50% fast cruising (85-90mph), 20% slow traffic and 30% other stuff!

I filled the tank up again today and managed to get in 17.9 Litres and the trip showed 144 miles since the last fill up. If my maths is correct that is about 36 to the gallon. Most of that mileage was commuting into London. I would have thought that I should get more than that. 180 miles (odd) to the tank, does that sound right?

I wouldn't be surprised if your mpg and range figures were ok, bearing in mind that you are mainly commuting in town. I'd bet if you head out of town on alonger run, you mpg figures would rocket.

6 litres in 20 miles, now that's some gas guzzling?.

I think you have a problem there.Running 2004 with 19t front sprocket, 9000 on the clock & do 95% motorway at 80-90 most of the time. Used to do 198-202 before the light came on, down to about 190 since i fitted the oxygen sensor bypass. Average 48-51mpg ridden hard.Get your dealer to sort it. Happier riding :upthumb:

I wouldn't be so sure.
There's a big difference between 95% of your riding being at cruising speed, and most of it commuting in London.

Hi. I had just had the same problem. The fuel lines are snap connector and seal with small neoprene 0 rings. These are very easily damaged, especially on the new metal fittings Tigers now use. I found mine had very small nicks in them caused by their being re-used and fitted without the required care. I replaced them and used a very small amount of silicone lubricant on them (from the plumbers) and now the smell of petrol has stopped and I now get at least 30%more to the gallon.
I am also kicking myself for not spotting it earlier.....
As of now I change them every time they are disturbed. :thump: :kck:
