97 tiger dying
Hi all, my 97 tiger will just stop running sometime. For instance I was going for a ride and at 10 mile it lost all power but would still turn over. I had it taken back to my house and 10 min after it started. I had it checked out by a mechanic (no triumph mechanic in Fairbanks). He checked all the electrical system, no problem even though it happen to him once. he said he played whit the kill switch for a while and it started. I called a triumph macanic 500 miles away and he said it could be a vacuum actuator or something like that.
Has any one seen this before? or have an Idea? I just can;t ride it if I don't know when I will go down.
I only have about 2 more or so mounts of riding this yeas and would like to ride.
PS: where would the vacuum actuator be on a bike with out cruse control?
Thanks
Joel

Hi
the ignition pick ups can brake down when hot
they test OK and work when cold.
bike runs for 2o -30 mins then stops until cooled and will restart OK
the other problem is fuel starvation. both the vent and feed pipe blockages have been reported

Thanks for that information Robbie:
I have more stuff to add, I went for a ride this morning, got seven miles and lost power, the tech went to 0 RPM. It turns over just fine.

started back up
After work, I went home and tried, and again it started just fine.
I think I will drain all the fuel and replace it with new just in case it had water or something happened to it, also replace the tubes.
Robbie, I don't mean to sound stupid, but what is an "ignition pick ups"?
Thanks
Joel

I'm with Robbie, my money's on a blocked petrol tank breather. Next time it stops on you. Immediately open the filler cap. If there's a slight sucking noise, that's your problem. The bike is sucking petrol out of the tank, but because the breather is blocked, a partial vacuum forms and the bike can't get any more fuel so it dies. After a while the air leaks in allowing the bike to restart.
I'll read up on how to clear the breather later and post it here if someone doesn't get to it first.
Ok, looked it up and nothing much in the book.
Take off the black panel between tank and seat on left side. Behind it, toward the front of the tank are 2 off 6mm tubes coming from the tank and going down behind the engine case next to the sprocket cover. Mark them to keep them the right way round then disconnect them. One is the tank overfill drain, the other is the breather but the book doesn't say which so you'll have to work that out yourself. The overfill will run from the drain hole inside the filler cap, on the tank neck and should be clear. The breather probably has a one-way valve in it so air can get up from the rubber hose to the tank but fuel can't get down. You should be able to blow gently through it. Of course, check the rubber tubes aren't blocked as well!!!!
This is all assuming you get the sucking noise in the first place though ...

OK so you were riding along in gear and there was an instant loss of power, the tach went to 0 with the engine turning and when you pulled the clutch in the engine died!!
did you go over a bump, braking, accelerating? if so look for loose wires.
otherwise I still think you have a problem pickup, it is the classic symtoms. see drawing from bikebandit.com

FWIW I had a similar issue with a Kawa ZRX1200 a few months back.
Turned out to be a kink in the fuel tap vacuum hose.

hi probability of ignition pick up failure.
tach to 0 is major clue, refires after cooling is second, both are classic symptoms of pick up failure.
part is $50 and located in cover in front of clutch.
good luck, TS tuscon

Clean out the carbs
I had a similar problem, if your bike stands for long periods the petrol emulsifies and eventually the bowel of the carb is full of this bad petrol. It starts on the choke but dies when under load, I managed a few miles before it gave up. After standing for a few minutes it started again which indicated something electrical was breaking down due to heat but I decided to strip down the carbs ( I cleaned the jets with a hand held steam cleaner) but I think just emptying the bowl of bad petrol may have done the trick. Mine runs like a dream now. Getting the carbs off is a little bit of a pain but work methodicaly and its not so bad.

If the tacho goes to zero, then highly likely to be the pickup (ignition sensor). I can speak from personal experience.
