I recently fitted some fog lights to some Jacklilly engine bars, they are all wired in nicely and work well. A thought which nags me slightly is whether the electrical system can cope with the extra demand. If i should ride a long journey with my headlight and fogs on will it eventually drain the battery?

they will not drain the battery as the engine supplies the electrical power when it is running.

test them by putting them on and seeing if the headlights dim on tick over and then get brighter as the engine is reved.

if they are 55w each then you should have no problem. but as the tiger has the engine of a sports bike the alternator output is low so running headlights, fog lights and electrical clothing can put stress on it. I haven't found any figures of the load the FI system puts on the bike so don't know how much is left for other goodies.

IIRC the alternator on the older injected 900s is of a rather higher capacity than the 955s, the loss coming when they moved the alternator inside the cases. Don't know what the ratings are off the top of my head and it's too late for me to go looking but I'd imagine a 2000 900 would cope just fine.

I posted this awhile ago. It should be self explainatory. The power consumption of the ECU and EFI is a guess.

It turns out my 22 month old Tiger had a burnt out stator. Triumph replaced it under warranty (thanks, as it AUD$800!) but said that it was basically my fault for overloading it. It then overheated and burnt out.
I have factory heated handgrips, an alarm and a Touratech/Hella Xenon lamp fitted and have fitted a relay so both headlights work.

I was totally unaware that Triumph have gone backwards in alternator design and capacity with the 955 motor. The mechanic told me it was to save weight!

The electrical use looks like this: -
1. basic running Fuel pump etc 120 watts (approx as per the mechanic)
2. 2 headlights @ 100 watts each 200 watts
3. Hella lamp 35 watts
4. Heated handgrips I guess at least 50 watts

Adds up to 405watts
Alternator capacity is 35 amps = 420 watts

So, turn the heated handgrips up to high, toot the horn or use a break light and indicator at the same time and your smoking!!!!!!!!

This is a great disappointment to me as my bikes intended purpose sees it ridden for long distances in the cold at night. I am right on the edge of a $900 bill. Triumph suggested I pull the relay on one of the headlights. I am going to look into lower wattage headlight bulbs and maybe a stator rewind/output upgrade instead.
I went to Phillips blue 55/90w headlights.

Hi all. Newbie considering an '01 with 15 K miles. Coming from a Concours/GTR 1000 they know about lacking electronic oomph. Have you considered making a different harness for the headlight? Basically straight to the battery? I don't know the schematics from Triumph factory so this point may be mute. However, this did ywork wonders on my Connie. Also, you could mod the headlights/fog/driving into HIDs (expensive but saves the watts).

According to the boys at Hinckley, you have 10A to play with.
This means if you load the system 120W, you're using max.
I think I'd prefer to leave a little to handle miscalculation, variations, resistance etc.
