Here is one for you all.

When I was fitting my engine bars a couple of weeks ago I discovered a damp patch on the front of the engine, brief analysis decided it was oil, did a bit of head scratching etc & put it down to a leaky gasket. did aquick double check on oil & water to ensure there was no cross contamination, thankfully there wasn't. It is more of a weep than a leak so not too worried about oil loss.

Bike was coming up for service anyway so brought that forward a couple of weeks & put it on the list for repair under warranty. I put the bike in this morning to my local dealer & I have just found out that I have a leaky crank case, the damned casting is pourous :???: The guys are trying to get hold of Triumph warranty dept to find out where we go from here hope this doesn't turn into saga . Guess I am about to find out how good my dealer & Triumph really are.

Thats what one would hope.

So far so good, went in to pick up the bike last night, had a look at the part of the casing where they found the leak & sure enough you can see that there are inclusions in the casting which will have lead to porosity or blow holes forming. its just a bit annoying that it passed factory inspection before being machined, painted & built into my engine.

They should have all the parts by the beginning of next week. & they say it will take about 3 days to do the job. Only fly in the ointment is the fact that they cannot order the new shells (apparently they need replacing during a job like this) until they split the engine to find out what class of shell is fitted to my engine (seems they come in three or four different sizes) so here is hoping that the required size is in stock. Only bummer is the ***** thing will need a bit of running in again.

Also looks like they will be giving me one of their demonstrators while my wheels are in dry dock, always good news cos the sales team are usually keen to get them back & it tends to reduce delays.

So fingers crossed for a speedy solution.

My brand-new '05 Tiger has a similar problem. Right near the neutral sensor (tucked in between the casing and the countershaft sprocket cover) there's a hole in the case. A hole! About the size of a pencil lead. Service rep called Triumph to see whether they should install a new engine or replace the cases. Service rep says to replace the cases. Can't say I'm too disappointed, as this thing vibrates something fierce. Hoping that while they have the engine apart they can see if something else is amiss. I'm also going to see if I can buck up to have them balance the pistons and crankshaft to smooth the bike out. Two mechanics rode my bike and said the vibration is normal. For whatever reason, Triumph people think triples are smooth. All I can guess is they're coming off twins or something, or maybe have never rode a modern Japanese 4, because after getting off my ZRX1200, this thing feels like an adult toy.

Well the Orange monster went into dry dock this morning to start on its major surgery, sitting here like with fingers crossed hopeing that they get all the bits & pieces back in the same places as they came from & working as well as before.

So far so good with the job, quick turn around getting the parts & they are even providing me with a loan bike (a bonny, quite looking forward to a couple of days playing with that) only problem is that it seems to be monsoon season here at the minute so might not get full advantage. Hoping to get everything done & dusted for the weekend.

Well here we are two weeks (almost) further on & I have just got big orange back. No engine re-build done, cos they have lost the oil leak?????? go figure. After I had had it assessed & declared needing a new crank case casting I had done about 600 miles & could have told them that there was no sign of a leak, just wondering where the original oil staining came from. Guess who is going to be paranoid about keeping an eye on the casings for a while?

Anyway, glad the engine didn't get stripped down, that was bugging me a bit, year old motor, just about run in (5250 miles), didn't really want it split down. So good news is thats her serviced & ready for summer. All Ii need now is the weather & the time to use it.

PS

I did quite enjoy my wee lone of the Bonnie, nippy little thing & a fair bit of fun but "praise the lord" it great to be back astride a TIGER.
