I've had a defective charging system for the past few months on my '95 Tiger with ~ 62K miles on it - fairly common symptoms - voltage starts off around 12 vdc and steadily decreases as the engine runs - to the point that it dies a little under 8 vdc. Put a new battery in - same issue. I've got both the factory service manual as well as the Haynes. The factory one sez very little about troubleshooting the charging system. The Haynes gives a few tests to try - mostly checking the regulator - based on my results, I went ahead & rolled the dice and ordered a new one - appears to be backordered. I've checked the rotor and it's good - next obvious step would be to check the stator, but due to the way the 3 leads tie directly into the rectifier board, I'm uncertain & leary to do so - anyone have a suggestion for this? I've already checked all connections - appear to be good. Thanks!
Thanks for the link - however, someone else had forwarded it some weeks ago to me - spent a few hours trying to decipher it - came to the conclusion that there's just too many differences with my electrical system in comparison to what is shown for it to be a reliable, effective troubleshooting tool. While the Tiger has a Japanese charging system (Nippon-Denso, IIRC), the layout is different enough from what is shown - worried about shorting something else out and causing more issues!
Was hoping that someone on the forum had successfully tested the stator on a 94-98 Truimph and could specifically relay their technique.
What you need is an oscilloscope. Check the wave output from the stator.
The charging on my 2001 Tiger (internal alternator no piggyback) failed a few weeks ago, and with only a multi-meter I was getting completely confusing info. All the readings of ohms from the startor said that all 3 phases were good.
5 seconds with a scop showe 15volts from 2 phases and 1 volt from the third.
Got a brand new alternator from these guys for £79 delivered... better than £325 from Triumph.
