I have just replaced the chain and sprockets at 20,000 miles. The rear sprocket was like new and the front sprocket had slight hooking on the teeth. I ride my Tiger reasonably hard and I use a Lubetronic oiler. The lack of wear was impressive.

I felt that 20,000 was about as far as I dare take it. I have had to adjust the chain twice in the last 3 months which got me worrying. After all the chain will usually let go when you're on the gas and that is probably not a convenient time to be freewheeling!!!

I was with a group last year when one rider on an Africa Twin broke his chain. The bike had traveled 26,000 miles and decided to let go halfway up a Swiss mountain on a Sunday. The bike coasted to a stop and the rider was OK but he spent 2 whole days getting the bike recovered and fixed.

I wondered what sort of mileage other Tiger riders expect to get from their chain.

I changed mine recently at ~30k miles. Front sprocket had very little wear and I could not see any wear on the rear. The old chain was a good 3/4 inch longer than the new chain. I had to double check that I had the correct length new chain. I was ver impressed that they lasted as long as they did. I ride hard and do minimal chain maintenance.

At about 25,000 miles my chain wouldn't hold an adjustment any longer. I replaced everythj\ing, threw them in the garbage bin wihtout checking for wear. I was happy with that kind of longevity.

17,000 miles with a somewhat recreational approach to maintenance. I feel shame.

Has anyone considered just changing the chain since most all the reports are showing little sprocket wear? I have 16K on my 2006 and I am starting to look at the chain. My thought was to change it at the 24K service but I question the sproket change since I see lttle or no wear on these. I thought an approach might be to go with a new chain at 24K and the chain/sprocket at 48K. It is not a matter of being cheap, I just can't see replacing parts that are not worn out.

I broke out two of the rollers on the chain at about 25,000. The pins held, I heard a clicking that I thought was a nail in my tire. I'm now at 36K and replaced the front sprocket with a 19 tooth at about 30K. The rear looks fine after all those miles. I'm sure the conditions experienced by the members on rat.net vary so much that there really isn't one answer that's best. In Arizona my Tiger gets wet about four days a year. I know that's not what happens in Scotland!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm sure my chain would have lasted longer. However we do get to spend more time riding in the rain in the UK which reduces chain life.

The replacement I fitted is a top of the range Tsubaki Sigma chain. So hopefully this one will last even longer.

My rear sprocket showed very little wear after 33000 miles and I did consider re fitting it. The front was considerably hooked and definately needed changing. I'm now thinking of changing the front again after 15000 miles which I hope might extend the life of the chain.

Changed first chain and sockets at 16K. Fitted an electronic oiler and over did the oil no end. At 39 K no sign of wear anywhere. Overtightening the chain is thn worst ting you can do to it.
So hand loose and slimy.... it lasts for ages :hammer:
