Hi there, I need to replace a smashed headlight. My manual mentions 'removing the cockpit' without any further guidance. Anybody out there who can tell me how to remove the cockpit ? I assume that replacing the headlight unit itself is fairly self explanatory, but any tips are greatly received.

Thanks

Hi YellowFellow,

1. Remove windscreen (4 screws).
2. Remove the black cowlings that hold the turn signals (3 allen screws each).
3. Remove the cockpit ( 4 allen screws).

Mine only have 2 (Torx) so don't spend too long looking for the third one :-D

Mine have two allen and one Torx...go figure. The two allens are on the outside underneath the cowling and the Torx is on the interior of the fairing.

Three is correct. The thing that drives (drove) me crazy about the Tiger was the creative mix of fasteners. I have, over the course of rebuilding, replaced lots of fasteners, usually with stainless. Things rust in the Arizona desert, too! On the black cowlings I replaced the outside screws with stainless and the inside ones with a hex head bolts. This makes it easier to take apart on the road with the small toolkit I carry. Most of the torx, other than some of the larger engine fasteners have been replaced by allen. Thankfully, some of the really specialized fasteners - like the big-headed numbers that hold the cowling on - are allen. I also replaced the phillips screws in the handlebar controls with allen. Stripped phillips make me more crazy than torx!

Hi YellowFellow,

I relent,

1. Remove windscreen (4 screws).
2. Remove the black cowlings that hold the turn signals (3 FASTENERS each).
3. Remove the cockpit ( 4 allen screws).

I guess it depends on the bike year. Mine is an 2003 tiger, so:
1. remove 4 phillips screws on windshield
2.remove 2 large allens beneath windshield
3. remove turn signal cowling( 3 allens, 1 attached to inside fuel tank, and 2 on outside of indicator cowling.( dont remove the allen that is actually holding on the turn signal)

This should expose the headlights...now you can remove the 3 allens that hold the headlight bracket in to get to the bulbs, or leave in place to take out glass housing. fyi...hope it helps...-Mike
