I've phone three triumph dealers in the Midwest to inquire about the cost and thoroughness of the 12K service interval.

Tiger_05.pdf

Two said $325 - 400 and one $750 @ 5 - 8.5 man hour's, respectfully.

With such a disparity, I then asked each if the 12K interval chart items were performed exactly as recommended by Triumph and in adherence with the charts, check-off list.

Only one dealer said yes and yes it was the $750 job. Makes sense since all the fluids are replaced, valve job, etc ... ( The valve job is of course debatable.)

However, the lower number techs said they only change and adjust what is required. So, really, this sound's more like a "check-out", to me.

I interpreted the 12K as a "do it all - no matter what", kinda thing.

It seems to me that here we have two "schools of thought";

One is do as your told by the manufacturer.

One is based on the empirical knowledge of the technician.

It would be interesting to listen to the forum member's viewpoint and, perhaps, experience(s), regarding major service interval's?

Walt

Tigger I know I'm in the UK, but just had my 12,000 mile service a few weeks ago. Cost was £375 but I needed new brake pads all round so it came to £418. That involved the whole lot, including valve adjustment etc... Had to leave the bike with them for a few days as it was apparently an "all day job"... I thought that was quite a lot until a friend told me his Honda VFR VTEC's 16,000 mile service cost him £685!

Bike feels great again though, just like new...

That would, currently, be: $771.227 USD - so far on par ...

Thanks Sofalofa -

First off, cheap pads you jammy bastard! Secondly, the 12,000 isn't that big a job and a dealer should easily be able to do it in less than a day. The big one is the 24,000 or 4 year service, which does require more work but even that is less than a day's work for an experienced workshop. I will soon be finding out all about the 48,000 service. I have never had to leave my Tiger for more than a day. Lastly, you're right - it feels like new afterwards

Foxee, I don't mind my bike taking longer than a day as my dealer always gives me a loan bike whilst it's in... because of the distance, I got a loan of a Sprint ST 1050 for a week. This bike is hailed bythe press as an "awesome" bike. Put in over 1,000 miles on it, but have to say, after just a week, getting back on my Tiger after the Sprint ST felt like moving from a hard wodden chair to an extra-comfy sofa! I love me' Tiger!

My 05' tiger is going in for it's 6000 service. Interesting to see what they do. Since the bike is 14 months old, I would think chanigng the fork oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, and engine oil should be in order. Remember that fluid life is based on contamination and heat cycles.

You'd think - wouldn't ya?

Yet, 2 of the, now, 4 dealer's I've checked with will only change the fork fluid "If it needs it." or by "The customer's request.". They must have "special" vision to be able to visually, analyze the brake fluid, coolant and fork oil's spectral content for containment's and the effects of heat cycles.

I think you've made a very good point about the heat cycles and wear.

I get uncomfortable when they supercede the OEM specification's, that are clearly, printed, in black and white.

Walt
