Hey guys,

New to the site and wanted to share what's going on with my Tiger to see if anyone has any idea what's going on.

I've got a 2005 Tiger with 18,600 miles on it. The dealer has done all the prescribed maintenance on it.

This just started..... I put gas in it, which amounts to a warm engine being turned off for about 5 minutes, then restarted. Upon restarting, the idle is very rough and the engine will quit if I don't keep it reved up. Once I ride it down the road a few miles, it's fine. Leave it off for about five minutes and restart..... same thing....rough idle and will quit if I rev it and let go of the handle.

I took it to the dealer and left it two days ago. Yesterday, I talked to the mechanic/technician and he says he has never seen such a thing and doesn't know what's wrong. They are going to call some sort of hot line directly to Triumph and see what they say. In the mean time, any ideas?

Thanks for any replies.

Sounds like either a bad sensor or the ECU map is incorrect. The dealer should be able to check it all out - there would be a DTC in the ECU (sorry for the TLAs) if a sensor had gone down.

The Triumph workshop manual has a whole section devoted to tracking down this type of problem.

Did this start directly after a recent service by the dealer?

After the 12,000 mile maintenance by the dealer, I did seem like the exhaust was stinkier. But no, this problem just started.

I'll try to be more specific..... I rode over an hour at about 80 mph on the interstate.... stopped for gas..... as I was leaving the gas station, I decided I needed to make a phone call so I just went across the street to an empty parking lot and made the call. About 5 minutes or so had gone by.... I started the engine, went about 15 yards to the stop sign and it quit. I pulled to the side of the road and checked to see if maybe I had kicked the sidestand or something...... started the engine again and took off. I didn't notice anything weird at the several stop signs for the next 50 miles.

3 weeks later, after recovering from neck surgery, I ran out a couple of tanks and didn't notice anything. On about the third tank, after filling up, I went about 15 yards over to the road. When I stopped to see if the coast was clear, it quit again. I rode home (3 miles) and there was no problem.... idled just fine. I turned it off and waited 5 minutes. When I started it, it would idle, but roughly. If I reved it up a little, it would quit. I could rev it and slowly go back down to idle and it would be rough, but not quit. If I reved it and let go of the throttle, it would quit.

FWIW

I went by the dealer yesterday. They said that Triumph had recommended a few remedies, but non of them worked. The mechanic (who has a 2004 Tiger) was exchanging parts EDU? with his bike. Still nothing.

Seen this problem several times. If it is not the TPS sensor, (the dealer would be able to reset this for you) then it is most likely the tip-over valve located on the real left hand corner of the tank (Small cycliner shaped bit located inline on one of the two hoses coming out of the tank). They cost a few dollars and are a two minute replacement.

As they age, the fuel vapors cause them to shallack and begin to stick. It causes the tank to have a slight suction on it and will make ide near impossible for the first minute or two because the pressure to the injectors drop. The easyiest way to diagnose this is to either remove it (for testing only) or start the engine with the gas cap open (again only for testing)

Hope this helps.

Finally, after 12 days and 10 man-hours, they figured it out.

It seems that a sensor that communicates engine temps to the computer, which allows for proper air/fuel ratio adjustments, had an insufficient voltage output. At least, that's the way I understand it.

It shouldn't have taken them anywhere near that time if they'd worked by the book.
