Hi,
I'm wondering if I should be worried. Can anyone comment?
Just picked up a 2001 955i yesterday in great looking condition, all stock. Motor power feels flawless. Only problem is this squeaking noise from the motor.
I really thought it might need front brakes; it sounds like when the pads get down to the wear indicators? But when I tap the front brakes expecting the chirp to stop as it would, it remains constant.
It happens only between 45 and 60 MPH, only in 6th gear, and I'm pretty sure only during cruising (not under load or decel). If I pull in the clutch it immediately stops. The noise does not vary with RPM.
It's loud enough that I could hear it over the motor + 60MPH highway traffic + driving in a downpour, with my helmet on of course, though I was straining to hear it enough that I was lifting the visor on my helmet to let in more sound.
I guess I'm worried since it goes away with the clutch lever in, that it's coming from a bearing somewhere or something like that. #1) Does anyone have experience with this specific issue? #2) From reading other posts in this forum it seems like these bikes develop little phatom noices. Is this typical and normal and people just keep riding that way or are people following up with mechanics when they hear these little noises?
The bike does "feel" perfect in terms of ride, power delivery, everything. If I were def I would not be writing you now.
Thanks!
