Just changed the oil (Mobil 4T) on my '05 Tiger, since it didn't get done prior to winter storage last November. As there was only ~3400 miles on the synthetic, I rode it a little bit this spring (which is not my normal SOP).

The owner's manual says total oil capacity is 4.2 US gallons, or thereabouts. I had a little left in my previous 1-gallon container of Mobil 4T, so I added that first. Then I added approximately 85% of the new container before checking oil level. Bike was on centerstand (with 2X block of wood under front tire to keep it reasonably level front to back-while draining, then re-filling). Before filling crankcase, I added oil to the spin-on filter, as per the manual. Then, filled crankcase as described above. Then started engine to circulate oil throughout, and ran a couple minutes. I checked the oil level, and it was waaaay over top hash mark on dipstick. I ended up removing drain plug briefly to drop some oil, then quickly re-tightening. I repeated this process, 3-4 times, each time checking dipstick level before I was satisfied that oil volume was correct. Of course, bike was upright while checking stick. I believe the owner's manual oil capacity listed is higher than actual. Anyone else notice this? I also think that the O-ring on the dipstick should have been retained in a machined groove at the top so it doesn't fall off the dipstick almost each time it is pulled out of crankcase. It invites foreign objects into the case, and is subject to loss if not noticed-which then results in likely oil leak when riding.

It almost makes me long for my (recently sold) '97 TBird's hard to read sight glass

Dont forget that you must screw the dip stick in to check the oil level

Tell me this...

I know why an engine can't run without oil but what happens when run with too much?

In actual fact, it's 4.3 liters, dry fill at the factory or after a teardown.

The shop manual says 3.9L for oil change only, or 4.0 for oil and filter change--meaning, they don't expect you to be able to get that last 0.3 liter out of the sump in a regular oil change.

Dead right. And 1 litre = 1.76 pints so :-

4 x 1.76 = 7.04 pints which I would round down(ish) to :-

3.5 Quarts (UK) But, hang on a minute.....aren't US quarts different to UK quarts because of your gallon being smaller than our?? Oh, for gods sake...........

Our pints are 20 fl oz. Yours are 16 fl oz.

So, 7.04 x 20 = 140.08 fl oz divide by 16 = 8.80 US pints. So...........the answer is........

4.40 US quarts.

Seems that a US quart is very similar in size to a litre.
