The cooling system on my Tiger seems to be out of commission. It started with excessive blow out from the overflow tank (I am used to the small amout of overflow that occasionally occurs when the bike heats up in traffic). The overflow tank is just pouring coolant out and does not go down when the bike is cooled off. I have not a lick of diagnosis yet (I am thinking water pump or thermostat). :???:

I managed to get the bike home from work (~12 miles of back roads) by coasting down hills without the motor running. The temperature gauge went up to half way to the red. If it went higher than that I would stop the bike and let it cool for a few minutes. What a drag, good thing I can ride the Scrambler while I sort this out.

This bike has been so reliable that I am in disbelief! Any thoughts?

Fred

I had a similiar problem. I took it to a dealer and he said it was quite common . The solution for mine was to replace the pressure cap. around £10.

Boocat-

Did the bike run warm as well? I have had a small amount of coolant leak through the overflow hose whenever the coolant fill was above the middle of the container and the bike was sitting in traffic, this is much worse.

The pressure cap would be a simple fix which would be very nice.

Thanks,
Fred

A quick answer here cos got to dash, please excuse the brevity.

Three most likely causes, in no particular order of likely-hood.

1. Pressure cap failure. (radiator cap)
2. Airlock in the engine. (bleed system to cure)
3. knackered water pump.

No 2 is easiest to solve. There is a thread here somewhere on how to, or dig into Mr Haynes book of bodges.

No 1 is relatively cheap (if you can get a cap some folk have not had a lot of luck finding one) easy repair if you have small hands and good manual dexterity. Either that or you need to lift the fuel tank to get access. Can also require to bleed system if you have lost enough coolant.

No 3 needs new Water Pump I'm sure there will be someone along soon who can say what that involves.

Fingers crossed its a simple sort.

D-

Thanks, I was already goping to try the bleeding thing as I had my coolant changed about 1,000 miles ago and it had never been quite right. Maybe I have lost enough coolant to create a larger air cavitation.

I'll let you all know what I find.

On my 2k I've had the reservoir crack and one of the plastic elbows for the fluid return break. Just another thing to check.

Gary wins the prize! It was the plastic elbow holding on the tube connecting the radiator and the overflow tank. I should have been more suspicious when coolant starting leaking from the overflow tank area. A $0.90 part plus the coolant which is now very clean!

The bike is back and running fine!

Thanks for all the help.
