I bought my bike with 11500 mile on the clock. I asked the dealer to do the 12000 mile service but I understand that the valve adjustment is a pricey job so I don't know if they went that far in their generosity.

Is it a necessary job. what does it do? and is it noticable?

Checking and adjusting the valves is pricey... It requires pulling the valve cover, measuring all of the valve clearences and changing the valve shims where required.

If Valves are not set correctly, they can either cause your bike to lack power and/or cause premature failure of the valve itself...

It is required to check the valves and ensure they're are correctly adjusted before doing Throttle body syncronization and other 12K checks...

Getting ready to do that on my bike as well, for the second time... I'm at 26k miles...

Hope that helps

Its important to have the valves checked, though at my 12k service they did not need adjusting. Engine still rattles though, but then thay all do that, sir.

Checking it is fairly easy. And a good opportunity to check your new ride out (and you'll find out how to take the plastic off) Adjusting it is a pain in the postierer, though just a slow process. Do a search for a shim removal tool here. ~$45.
