Cover gaskets - to goo or not to goo?

I'm assisting a chum who took to the countryside on his Tiger last week-end. As a result, the right-side crankcase end cover is, shall we say, past its best and needs replacing. Once a new cover and gasket(s) are on hand, should a jointing compound be used? I've suggested a thin film of Hylomar, but it looks as though there was nothing used at the factory. What's the recommendation? Mr Hayne's publication just says "use a new gasket" - Hah!

I'm a great fan of Wellseal - a very thin coat applied with a paintbrush. Works well on the Velo. But modern machining & metals are very good. I haven't replaced that particular gasket but did put the recommended thin smear of silicon on the cam cover when I checked the valves a couple of years ago and that seemed to work fine.

I always use a very thin amount both side of the gaskets. Belts and braces me as I hate oil leaks.
I had to remove that cover last year and used a new gasket and Hylomar.

I've used nothing on the valve cover or alternator cover and have no leaks. Reused the valve cover gasket. Had to use a new alternator gasket due to the small amount of sealant used for the stator wire grommet.
