Judder when braking

When I brake I get a considerable amount of juddering coming up through the bars. It is speed relative almost as if I had something catching on the disc on every rotation. Braking really slowly I can almost certainly feel that there is an inconsistency. Holding the lever with the same pressure develops the judder but more noticeably it seems to have a gripping point followed by the normal braking then a quick grip and so on, fast enough to be related to the disc. Looking at the discs they seem fine, all bolts are tight and the disc appears smooth. Taking the Calipers off the brakes all look fine they are relatively new and the pistons work just fine, plenty of braking fluid.. I was thinking just to replace both discs but if you have any other ideas? Do I need to replace the brakes now or could it be something else?

Warped discs i'm afraid,'They all do that Sir'

If the bike is out of warranty, look for aftermarket like EBC.

You could always give Triumph-ant a bell, they sorted a guy out on another forum with the same problem - different bike tho.

Triumph aren't the only culprits. BMW have the same failure rate.

It's hard to know whether it's cheap manufacturing, materials or assembly.

I think I've mentioned before, there's probably more bikes out there with
warped discs but the owners don't realise it's a fault.

Yip, warped discs

Not sure what effect a warped disk will have on the other brake components if you don't change them but beware that they will fail an MOT "if its easy to feel the judder" according to my MOT place. There is an official variation value on the braking capacity but I can't remember what it is.

I had mine replaced after some scumbag knocked my bike over in a work carpark then buggered off !"£!£$"£%$. Anyhow, the insurance replaced the discs (and all the other bits) but the new ones warped within about 1500 miles. Performance Triumph in Swindon replaced them at no cost and the new ones have been fine.

They did say that it wasn't that unusual although 1500 miles was very low. Its happened on other models too.

I must say that Performance Triumph have always been great with service and support.

I've just had a new rear disc replaced on my works BMW and it's warped within two months (1000 miles). That's why I think it's sometimes down to assembly.

BTW, the bikes already had two sets of front discs due to warping in its 25K life and it's not unique on the fleet.

If the fitter torques down the bolts unevenly, or doesn't clean up the locating surfaces, it doesn't take much to warp the disc.

The discs on my 06 Tiger were replaced after 5k, although they were probably shot well before that mileage. They've now done a further 5k without problem.

Incidentally, when I first reported the problem to the dealer, they said that the run out wasn't sufficient for Triumph to replace under warranty. However, with a little friendly persuasion, the dealer relented and exaggerated the problem to Triumph.

My 06 Tiger has had three lots of front disks replaced within the warranty and have now got the same problem outside of the warranty!

Triumph have come to the party and are replacing them again!

While I applaud Triumph for their support outside the warranty, I want the problem fixed, once and for all!

Have any of you used aftermarket floating disk replacements?

If you have, where did you get them and how are they performing?

I believe the same problem exists on another Triumph 955i sports model of the same vintage too.

I really enjoy my Tiger and am not too ham fisted with the brakes but I don't soft peddle the bike, I bought it to use to it's full capability.

Perhaps that should read, "to my full capability" rather than the bike's! (there is probably quite a big difference)

It's an old problem but it is new to everyone who has it. Hard to say why some bikes get it and some don't. I heard quite a few suppositions about cause and effect but after my 05 went through three front disk sets in three years Triumph finally, with some nudging, replaced the front wheel. I haven't had a problem since.
