Where did you guys who have fitted GPS and communications find was the best way to take the power; direct from the battery with in-line fuse or off existing wiring somewhere??

There are several fuse blocks available. I found a completely enclosed box I just can't remember where I got it.

I've always found it's an easy task to route a lead direct from the battery with an inline "blade" fuse housed in the battery box. This way you can easily pull the fuse when supply is not required for extended periods, as some accessories still put a small drain on the power supply even when not in use. It's also easier than opening up the cockpit for connections.

I have got a small fused junction box behind the fairing that has 4 outlets from it, which i run my GPS, Phone Charger & Digitool gear indicator. I ran the supply lead for this junction box from a switched live on the fuse box. That way i cannot leave anything on when i turn off the ignition.

Thanks guys for all the info!

BigStripey

Can you give me more details on how you did this as it sounds like a good way of powering multiple items. Where do you make the power connection in the fuse box and where did you buy your fused junction box. I'll tackle most jobs but I'm a bit nervous on mucking about with the electrics I must admit. Thanks.

IPG,

I got the plastic box from Maplin Electronics, they do loads of little sealed electrical boxes. I then drilled a total of five holes in the sides of the box (which is a bit bigger than a box of matches?) I then put a wiring grommet in each hole to make it pretty weatheproof.

The switched live wire comes in from the fusebox through the grommet. and inside i have put a blade fuse holder (5 amp) in line. The live then goes into a simple connector block, which i then connect my devices to(each one coming in through a different grommet). I also have a good earth (ground) wire running into the box as well, to save running earth wires all over the front of the bike.

It is a simple little job, but it does mean that you can loom all the wires up properly and make a neat job of it.

I need to check the fuse box to say what fuse number it was that i took the switched live from?.....i'll update that tomorrow. And next time i've got the front end off, i'll take a photo and post it up.

Hope this helps...

Being in the process of convincing myself to replace the cheapo comms unit with an Autocom, I'm looking at electrics myself - just having a look in the handbook, and can't see any fuses for heated grips (given bike being a 2000)? Does this exist?

According to my handbook, fuse 10 is the accessories fuse, anyone got any idea what this powers? Is it only the power outlet under the tank? Is this switched?

Jim - which switched live did you take power off for your extra power box?

Any help much appreciated, same as IPG I've got a bit of respect for the electrics, don't want to mess around too much, although I like things being tidy.

Stupid question last - I assume earth is negative (?) but where do you guys take it from? On a car you can sort of take it off any bodywork, do you have to take it off the battery on the bike?
