Hi all,

I'm working on setting up the new Tiger webpage on TwistedThrottle.com, and writing to seek assistance of the wise members of this forum in understanding model years.

The manufacturers we work with (Givi/Hepco/Krauser/SW-MOTECH/MRA) all seem to have their own names for Tigers and their own version of the way the model years run. :???:

I can't quite figure this out.

Most of the manufacturers we work with refer to three models:

Tiger 900 (-'98)
Tiger 900 ('99-'00)
Tiger 955i ('02-)

Is the so called "Tiger 900 (-'98)" really the Tiger 885, making the "Tiger 900 ('99-'00)" really the 885i?

If the above is all true, then what happened in 2001 in the U.S. & Canada? Was the 885i sold or the 955i?

My apologies for the newby questions - I just can't seem to Google this information. I appreciate any help.

Thanks for your help in advance!

-Erik

No worries, it's easily misunderstood.

As far as i understand it.....

Pre '99 the T4 Tigers were carburettor fuelled with either Keihin or Mikuni carb's commonly nickname the 'Steamer'

In '99 they put the T509 engine (same engine as the speed triple of that time buty downtuned a bit). This was the 885i, the first injected triple in a Tiger, the first of the new shape Tigers.

In 2001 they uprated the engine and put the T7 955i (Daytona derivative) in. The Tank graphics also changed to the plain black stripes plus a few minor cosmetic changes.

The so called '05 (but available in '04?), is the same engine, but has a steeper rake angle to the forks which has improved the handling. The bike has alloy wheels, a silver frame and new shadow graphics. It comes with the pannier boxes, heated grips and centre stand as standard.

Does that help ??

Sounds good. So the name "Tiger 900" is actually incorrect, and the true model designations are:

Tiger 885 T400 (-1998)
Tiger 885i T509 (1999-2000)
Tiger 955i T709 (2001-)

Given that much of the frame & bodywork of the 885i and 955i are the same, then are there any rules of thumb with bolt-on part fitment?

For instance, is a centerstand made for the 885 or 955i likely to fit the 885i?

And would side luggage and top luggage carriers for the 855i be interchangeable with the 955i?

Givi's application chart is the strangest. They show sidecarriers and a windscreen for the "Tiger 2000-2001" models (whatever that means).

Am I on the right track? Any further tips?

Thanks,
-Erik

> Tiger 885i T509 (1999-2000)

My understanding is that it would be more correct to state "1999-2001" in the above. There is at least one member here who has an early 2001 that came with the 885i, while mine, made about mid-year, is a 955i.

Hi Gents

The First Tiger(steamer) and the first fuel injected 900(99 model) were both called 900's you won't see any reference to 885 in the promo, only engine spec and registration documents, for the injected model introduced in 99.

It's the fact that a lot of people call the first fuel injected 900 an 885 that confuses the issue, the factory called it a 900.

The 955i is in all the models from 2001 onwards,to the present day.

I thought Triumph called the newer ones 'girly bikes'?

You start throwing around numbers and crazy specs nobody is going to know what you're talking about...
