grip heaters with relay problem

I'm not an idiot, but I play one when working on the bike. I'm wiring up the Dual Star grip heaters with a relay and an inline fuse coming off the battery. Every time I turn the key on, I pop a fuse. I have the wired up right, I think. I have the power from the battery coming into tab #87, the "turn-on" from the little headlight to tab #86, the power out to the grips lo/off/hi switch from tab #30, and ground to the battery from tab #85. I've seen some wiring diagrams that showed tabs 87 & 30 reversed, so I tried that too. No change.

Why am I popping fuses? I'm out of 10a fuses now, so I'm off to the hardware store to buy a bunch of them and hopefully I can get some help on this. I've checked the search function and didn't see anything, so if this has already been asked and answered, I'm sorry.

Relay wiring

It would appeAR THAT YOU HAVE WIRED THE RELAY CORRECTLY. Pin 85 operating switch, Pin 86 to earth/ground, Pin 30 Batter Positive, Pin 87 to heated grips. Pins 85 and 86 can be reversed, Pins 30 and 87 can also be reversed.

Try connecting everything up except the cable to the heated grips from the relay. If the fuse still blows then the problem is between the battery and the relay, if the fuse doesn't blow then the problem is from the relay onwards i.e the grip wirng.

Hope this helps.

I find a useful gadget is a 5W 12V bulb connected via a pair of flying leads to male blade connectors the same size as the fuse connectors. Replace the fuse which is blowing with this and it will light up when you turn on the power if the fused side of the fuse (IYSWIM) is going straight to earth. It makes fault-finding easier as you can then progressively disconnect stuff till the bulb goes off.

It won't hurt anything as the voltage on the downstream side will be essentially zero.*

*but of course as everything from here is at your own risk.

I threw my hands up earlier and called Symtec. I talked to the president himself (he answered the phone). We spent almost 30 minutes on the phone diagnosing the problem. It turns out that I have a shorted element, (the clutch side high setting). He's going to send me another clutch side heater.

So I wasn't doing anything wrong after all. I just thought I was crazy!
