Leaky hard bags

Rode down from Brisbane to Sydney last Saturday when the rain was really pounding down.

The topbox and both panniers all admitted a little bit of water. This is the first time its happened and the conditions were pretty extreme.

The seals look ok and I checked so see that I didn't trap anything in them when I closed the lids. Does anyone have any ideas what's gone wrong and can anything be done?

Mine too. Left the panniers on the bike whilst parked up overnight during heavy rain. Small amount of water in the left side pannier. Others have mentioned this before and advise that contents should be in bags. I can't find any damage to the seals and closing the pannier doesn't distort the seal or anything like that. So I'm a bit puzzled why this is happening. Bike is due a service soon I'll ask the dealer to check them out in case (no pun) there's somthing I'm missing. Anyway, I didn't think it rained in Oz? alf

There are a few threads here about this. Mine leaked because the mounting hardware inside the case (which I believe is "assembled" by the dealer) was "sealed" with some hard brittle stuff which didn't even cover all the potential ingress points. I took mine to bits completely and sealed them up properly with silicon since when they have been fine.

Cheers Ian,

I think you are right re the pannier hinges. Also on closer inspection, there are small gaps in the bottom of the topbox underneath the inner bottom panel. A bit of silicone should sort it.

Leaky Panniers

Haven't had mine long enough to "weather test" them. But the guy I bought it from told me had heard that leaving the bags closed while the bike is stored/not ridden, could lead to "crushed" gaskets then then may leak. So, whenever the bike is parked in the garage for a period of time, I unlatch the bags and leave them open.

Worth a try anyway. If I find out they leak, then the theory could definately be wrong!

I've heard that there may be as many as 4, or perhaps even 6, factory Tiger panniers on the planet that don't leak. Unfortunately, it appears that you are not one of the lucky ones (nor am I for that matter)

I have the inner side bags and always use a bin liner inside them. Belt and braces cause I know they are going to leak, but my gear does not get wet this way.

Givi top box never leaks.

Leaking like crazy.

My left case leaked like crazy. It seemed like any bit of rain funneled into the case. AND that is exactly what was happening. The seal on the front clasp was crap. So, this winter I took the cases apart and re-sealed everything with black automotive silicon. It takes a bit of time, but is well worth it, as I have been in a few downpours and I haven't found a drip inside. NO more wrapping everything in plastic for me!

Another point of entry for water, especially the left bag when on the side stand, is the mounting point to the brackets on the frame. If that area of the bag has any cracks water will seep in.

I use extra large ZipLock bags to store my raingear in and have a waterproof bicycle messenger bag that carries my other commuting necessities.

I can't see the point in not fixing the leaks when it's easy enough.
