Handlebars 955

After100+ miles I start to get an aching back (nothing wrong with the bike, it's me age you know) I also have really long arms. I would like to fit lower handlebars to make me lean forward more which will stop me from riding with a vertical back and also load up the front wheel a bit more.

has anyone else fitted lower bars to a Tiger 955?

Any pictures?

Would the bars from a 1050 tiger be of benefit?

what diameter are the Tiger bars, I presume there is nothing peculier in size and fitting.

you could always fit the bars of a 885 from 1999,they are lower and pull back a bit more,i changed mine for 955 bars and i get a bad lower back now after 200+ miles, the 885 ones are £60.00 from the dealers c/w built in crossbar.

my friend put lower bars on his 05 tiger. the bar is 7/8". my first stop would be flanders bars and check all their bends. decide what height and pull back you want then look at their extensive list of bends and see if they have what you want. you can also look at the pro tapers and maybe drz400 suzuki bars. they are simular in pull back but they are lower...have fun.

MX bars

I had a bad wreck in December that bent the bars. Since OEM bars were $90, I opted for $60 aluminum MX bars, can't remember the brand now, not Renthals, but those fit too. There are different shapes available, go to a local shop and pick. You can't mount those shiney bar-ends. There was some trouble fitting the heated grip wires, but it's done and works. Supposedly the aluminums absorb vibrations, etc, but I just did it because they were cheaper..

Lower Bars

I fitted some Renthals, pictures on the forum showing the difference. There're quite a bit lower and do foul the Vario screen but are ok on a standard screen.

I much prefer them, and I don't have long arms.

Renthals

Hi Greenman, thanks for the response, the bars in you pic is just what I am looking for.

Do you have a Renthal part number/style?

Did you have any problems fitting the bars? Electric grips etc

Did you drill holes for the switch locating pegs in the bars or did you file the pegs off?

Be careful when fitting MX bars.
When I needed to replace the bars on a R100GS following an off-road off, I made the mistake of just going to my local MX dealer and buying the first bars I could find and quickly found that they crippled my wrists. The bend was too shallow and cocked my wrists inwards unnaturally. Probably great for jumping table tops with your elbows high but not for long distance touring.
I eventually found some Renthals that matched the original bend on the BMW bars but were MX type low (I used bar risers to get them a similar height to original).
They are :- "PRE-88 PATTERN" Pt.# 707-01-SI-01.

As for heated grips. The BM grips went on OK and I drilled holes between the clamps to fit the cables down the centre of them OK. I did, however, find that the grips were less effective with the alloy bars and I think that was because the alloy conducted more heat away along the bars instead of into my hands. Maybe???

Bars

I can't find the Renthal part number but I remember they were for a Yamaha motocrosser. I drilled holes for the switchgear locating pegs as I don't think the switches grip the bars too well.

I bought the bars from M&P or somewhere like that; the website had a comprehensive list of handlebar dimensions. They are approx 730mm wide, have an 80mm upsweep and 65mm backsweep.

You won't be able to fit the bar ends as these (and all aluminium bars) have a smaller inside diameter.

Happy tinkering.
