I know there is a bmw type plug on my 955i (left side below the seat) but I want to add a cigarette lighter type on the front to attach power for my GPS. Seeing as the bar is becoming somewhat cluttered, I was thinking of a panel mount one, and drilling a hole in an empty spot (probably near the non-existant heated grip switch.)

Has anyone done this? There is a $16 kit on touratech-usa.com that includes an inline fuse. Where is the best place to draw the power. I was thinking that ideally I'd like to put it on the circuit that the other plug is on.

Suggestions, warnings, and abuse welcome.

Geof

Straight to the battery would be easy

You may want to surf a little--powerlet.com comes to mind first. There are many different adapters, etc. available. I wonder how the John Deere tractor dc plug got to be called a BMW type plug--was BMW the first motorcycle to use the John Deere tractor dc plug? :-D

If you do not have the heated grips then there is a switched and constant power available in the nose.

look for a 3 pin connector

the centre is an earth

I did exactly what you want to do - plug near the switch - and did what Robbie recommends, hooked it into the switched side of the existing lead under the cowl. It's fused at 10A, I think. I also put a digital ammeter in the place of the grip switch. I use heated gloves that plug into the vest and into the powerlet on the side of the bike. My GPS is hardwired into the same circuit under the cowl as the plug.

BMW has a plug-in adapter for around $25

have done exactly what you mentioned,i bought a marine waterproof 12v cigarette lighter socket from e-bay for about $4.00 and just drilled a 19mm hole next to my heated grip switch in the fairing, and wired it in to the existing scocket on the left hand side.

now i can charge my phone while riding,as i have it in my pocket and my sat nav is plugged into the fairing socket, and i can use any accesories in the fairing socket as its the standard size plug, such as blowing my air bed up when camping (leave the bike running) :-D

i will try and post a photo later

Cool, this is perfect as I don't have the heated grips, and doubt I will (southern NM has little call for them.) Powerlet sells kits also, but they're like $40 or so. I think the $20 kit is a good price. The small triangular dash piece, below the piece with the switch blank, looks the best place to attach.

I`ve been using the stock power outlet on my 1050 to power my IPAQ based satnav. BUT when its connected to power (charging) I`m getting horrendous static noise though the audio feed into my helmet via my Starcom.
when my IPAQ is not connected to power, the audio feed is clear and concise.
any ideas??

Smile Starcom/IPAQ

Had a simolar prob. Starcom (very helpful guys) will sell you a dedicated power lead, with a noise filter on it. This works well for me!
