I found that my tiger needed to have the preload set at 4-4.5 to have the front end not feel light. I weigh 230 or so with gear. This preload made the bike just a little taller than I wanted; I couldn't quite flat-foot it. So, this weekend I raised the front fork tubes in the triple-clamps around 15mm. This let me reduce the rear preload to 3. The front end feels very well planted and the handling seems a little quicker.

has anyone else done this?

Hi Pizzaman383, I have dropped my forks through by about 10mm and have the preload set on about 4 on the rear, I weigh about 120kilo and the bike handles much better, the front end does not feel as spongy as it did before and at 6' 3" I can just get both feet down flat footed.

There's plenty of threads here on lowering the front by up to 24mm. Mine's at 22mm right now and when I can find the time I'll probably change it back to 19mm as it seems a bit too ready to drop into corners. OK for a sports 600 but not what I want from this great big green thing.

Up to the '05 models (which had the steeper rake angle) raising the fork legs really makes the difference. I have tried everything from 10mm up to 22mm.

The best setting i have found is 19mm, it lets the bike turn in really easily but not 'fall in' like it does at 22mm.

I'm measuring the distance I raised the forks between the top of the triple-clamp to the line where the cap and the fork tube meet. Is that the right way to measure or do you measure from the triple-clamp to the top of the fork nut?

pizzaman, you are correct - the measurement is usually taken from the top of the yolk to the top of the stanchion

dropped mine by 10mm and what a difference. I wouldn't go as far to say that its sports bike flickable but it is a lot more manoeuvrable and balanced. Seems to dive less as noted above and frankly, I'm well chuffed.
